Schwarber is currently listed as a catcher on their depth chart.

“This is it,” Cubs president Theo Epstein said. “We’re not trading anyone else. We feel great about our outfield mix.”

Hopefully Baez is happy as the super infield sub...and hopefully he shortens up his swing and stops spinning himself into the ground.

Let's not get too excited. I still anticipate the Cubs losing a handful of games on the road to the World Series.

486 starts between 3 OF positions.

Guessing something like....

Heward plays 150
Fowler plays 120
Shwarber plays 90 in OF (20 more starts at DH and catcher and probably 10 PH appearances)
Soler 100 in OF
Remainder filled in by bench guys

I think you're light on Fowler, but you're on the right track.

Yea, he played 156 last year but they have a little more depth and Im sure they'll give him some rest if he swoons like he did in May last year.

I'd expect Heyward to spell Rizzo @ first a few times, Schwarber too. Maybe Bryant.

so if i'm understanding this right... if fowler wants back next year for $9m... but the cubs dont want him back.... he gets a buyout of $5M? if fowler doesnt want to come back in 2017 for $9M the cubs dont owe him the buyout?

so he's betting on himself to have a huge year so he can do better than 3 for $35mil next off-season? pretty ballsy move

Baez is the backup 1st basemen, with Bryant 3rd on the depth chart.

It is rumored that there is a handshake agreement next offseason that the Cubs will not make Fowler a qualifying offer, so that teams won't have to give up a draft pick to sign him for 2017 and beyond.

Seems like that would run afoul of league rules. Par for the course for Theo who seems to have an ethical dilemma every year.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

The Cubs organization are simply smarter than the rest of the league.

The Fowler move is perfect if it turns out that Fowler opts out after 2016, assuming Albert Almora is ready in 2017. It gives the Cubs what they need for 2016, yet does not block the path of Almora if he is ready a year from now.

Have fun with Shane Victorino competing for the fifth outfielder spot? Fine. Why would that be a bad thing?

You're a miserable fuck right now. How much worse is this going to get, Frank?

Someone needs to explain to Theo that rosters are only expanded in September. Perhaps they plan on starting Baez back in AAA as a full time CF? I know Victorino hit just .230 in 71 games last year and would be strictly an extra outfielder, pinch runner, pinch hitter, but I don't see where he offers much at this point that others they already had could not offer. If they plan on trading Soler, it might make a bit more sense. But I don't see the "Flyin Hawaiian" making the team.
