They say its because it is structurally unsound and concrete falls off it sometimes (to be fair concrete has fallen off it occasionally), but they have the money to fix it.

The reason they are tearing it down is because its ugly as sin and keeps property values in that area low. Complete redevelopment of that area is going to make some people so much richer than they already are. They'll put in some bicycle bullshit on it to appease the bike lobby.

Now this is one thing I agree with you with - Western is bad just about any time of the time, and this will make it worse. I've sat at the light going south on Western at Addison for 10 minutes sometimes.

there is no "fixing" that type of bridge superstructure (the beams). Its a pre-stressed concrete box beam superstructure. once it shows deterioration of the pre-stressed reinforcement strands you need to remove and replace with a new beam. this thing lasted close to 60 years which is about 10 years longer than you can usually hope for.

this bridge's substructure (the piers) are also in shit condition so they cant just rip the top off and replace it with keeping the old piers.

so to remove and replace with a new bridge is way more expensive than remove and not replace with a bridge... they must feel they can make the intersection work with a signal or else they would be putting the bridge back

You dont know the city of the Chicago at all. The last thing they discussed was whether a 5-way intersection could "work".

The city fired, or he retired I forget, the guy who is in charge of timing up all the stoplights 10 years ago and still havent replaced him. Since then the best you can hope for is his 10 year old work, everything else is random. Lake Shore Drive is still fucked up from when they put the Buckingham crosswalk back in, and it refucks itself in new ways every summer because the CDOT people reprogram the light to whatever they feel like doing. Every wonder why you can never go more than 8 blocks on Ashland w/out hitting a light? Or why Ontario/Ohio into the feeder are both so congested all the time? I dont remember the Central/Lawrence/Milwaukee/Higgins/Foster/NW hwy cluster ever making any sense at all. Its just chaos. All of it is chaos.
