It seems that Baez' floor is the old ex-Cub SS Jose Hernandez. Except that Baez both is a better defender and has more power. Jose Hernandez was a 1.5+ WAR player in five different years, and had 5000 PA in the major leagues over a very long career. He did have an anomaly career year at age 32 that seems a little, um, suspicious, in retrospect.

Still, not an awful floor for Baez. It would be a bit of a bust for a top 10 pick, but not in the Josh Vitters / Joe Borchard realm.

That might not be a bad comp for his floor. His ceiling is what I want to see though. I have seen guys like Corey Patterson, Ricky Weeks and Gordon Beckham, who had the tools to be special players, be less than they were capable of being. Then you see guys who get about as much from their abilities as possible. I just want to see Baez be the player he's capable of being. He made nice strides last year and I'm hoping that continues. but some people were so taken aback from the disappointment of his 2014, they can't let it go and somehow ignore the improvements he made last season.

I'm not saying that Baez is going to ever be anything special, but can anybody tell me which long-time All-Star infielder had the following first three years of his career: .220/.273/.261, .247/.295/.298, .230/.302/.293 ?

Hint: he will get serious consideration for the HOF in the next couple of years. Might even get elected some day.

Jeff Kent? Gary Sheffield?

Omar Vizquel. But he shouldn't be a HOF and not really a great comp for Baez because of his lack of power.

True. Very different hitters. I chose Kent and Sheffield as they were power guys as well as infielders. In fact, Baez' swing has been compared to Sheffield's. Whether he winds up with a comparable career....time will tell. Vizquel was a hell of a player though. Just played at a time when there were so many good SS, that he probably didn't get the recognition he deserved. With Jeter, Garciaparra and Rodriguez around for many of those years, he was overshadowed.

I agree he shouldn't be, but he'll get consideration.

The issue I'm raising is not that Baez will be Vizquel, but that Vizquel had three absolutely atrocious seasons, but the team gave him time to improve. Baez may not have as much time given the expectations in Chicago, but let's at least give him 700 PA to see what's what.

That's a fair point. I think Baez needs a couple of full seasons as an everday player or at least a part of a platoon to see if he can hack it in the bigs, and I am not sure that opportunity exists here. As such I think he would be better off on another team.

There is no doubt he would be better off on another team, where he could start every day. But I want what is best for the team, rather than the player. I don't want to see him go to the Brewers or Padres and hit .280 with 25-30 HR's . I want him to help this team, even if it means he only gets 250-300 AB's.

Big game today, boys. Can't start out 0-2 and still expect to win the Spring Training Championship.

Yeah, that Championship ranks right up there with the BP cup.

I am sure if any other team did this B&B would spend four hours roasting them. And rightfully so.

Almost an hour after the Cubs game was supposed to be broadcast on MLB network and they are still finishing up the stupid Pirates? Twins.
Looks like the broadcast will begin at 3:05, so no damage. Pirates/ Twins was pretty good. Man, I just wanna play some long toss right now. Spring is here!

Taylor Davis has ZERO chance of making the ballclub. If there were an injury to Montero, Contreras would be more likely to be called up. Davis looks like he got in the hot tub time machine and travelled from the 1960's.

That was a good game (3-0) to watch on MLB network. Did you go today? I saw where Torres was at SS today and was curious about what you saw from him today? I have seen a fair amount of highlight film on him, but have yet to see him in person.

Not taking much from these games, but watching...

-Heyward, has had 2 line drive outs, frozen ropes to RF...
-Javy, crazy swing factor, its still there, have to see how he can control it
-Addy Russell, want to see the power factor

As the attendance dwindles, will get better seats...Cubs at D Backs...sold out, besides Lawn Seats...

Cub $$ impact felt all over AZ area. I know some will deny it, just because its the Cubs, but building them a stadium to stay in Arizona was one of the better choices made in terms of building a team a facility. The Dbacks pulling 13,000, they got 9,000 for their cactus opener. Just as an example, White Sox had 3,000 at Cactus Opener. But that 10,000 person difference per game has an economic impact.
