I understand why he has it happen. You are not supposed to have a death grip on the bat. You are supposed to grip it lightly. You can actually swing the bat faster, if you don't grip it as tightly. Gripping it tightly is a negative use of energy. Just like as a pitcher you are supposed to grip the ball lightly, as if handling an egg. You can throw the ball faster with a lighter grip too. But the thrown bats for Russell are a bit too common. While on the subject of Russell though, has anyone else noticed that his throws to first are not as strong lately? Not sure if he has a tired arm or a minor injury of some kind. Then you watch Baez make throws from SS and the difference is really glaring. My goodness (not a lot of that) Baez has a gun.

No answer to what?

I have asked you 2 times in this thread to give stats for this season that show that Alexei is the better SS.

I said I'd rather have him in a pennant race this season. The numbers are almost the same. I'll take the guy with experience.

But let's get one thing straight. I hate Alexei Ramirez. Probably in the same way a lot of Cub fans hate Castro or hated Aramis. I know it's irrational though. Alexei has had a decent career. Russell would do okay duplicating it.

1. Numbers aren't almost the same, Russell a 3.1 WAR, Alexei a 1.1 WAR, that is 3x the value. Why don't you trade me three dollars for one of my dollars? It will be a great deal because the trade is almost the same.

2. What Alexei experience are you talking about? Getting dusted by the Rays in 4 games? I'll pass.

3. Alexei has had a very nice career, no argument here. But he is D-U-N done . But not for nothing, over his entire career, Alexei only had two seasons better (WAR) than Russell's 2015 season, Russell's 21 year old season, Russell's rookie season.

Went back to see if I could find my Addy v. Jeter comparisons from last year.

Now its a talking point for baseball media guys.

Just saying....yeah, its a lofty call, no doubt, but it makes it better when it happens.

It's a bad comparison. One guy is great hit/weak field, the other is great field/weak hit.

Do you think Addison Russell will be a weak hit guy when we talk about him over the next few seasons? He had the 8th highest OPS of SS in his first major league season.

I think he'll hit about .250 with 20 homers. It's fine for a guy who fields the way he does. He's not Jeter.

You could never force Marriage on Jeter the way Theo did on Addison

Jeter had an immediate impact on the Yankees in October. Addison decided to sit it out.

Slick fielding, .250 and 20 home runs. I'm so sick of Cub fans projecting every player to be one of the best in baseball.

Exactly 1 shortstop had power and average of .250/20. Brandon Crawford .256/21.

Going back the last 3 season, only 6 players have achieved that.

Oh he had an impact. If he plays in the NLCS, Cubs sweep for sure.

There aren't many great middle infielders right now. Obviously, Russell has the power to hit 20 homers. Do you really think he can't hit .250? in any case, it doesn't make him Jeter.

How many of them will be first ballot HoFer Derek Jeter? All 5? Just Russell? Only Correa?

believe it or not chances are none of them will even make the hall of fame, much less be first ballot. But that wont stop Cubs fans from comparing the one who clearly doesn't belong in even that group (Russell) from saying "I had that comparison before the media stooges being paid by Ricketts to talk up this team did!"

My point was more that had a cub fan made the same prediction, it would have been twisted and mocked as those parameters make him a stand out player in today's game. I agree with you he will be a very much above average shortstop but conced he will fall short of first ballet hall of famer.

Glyber Torres.....

By John.Moore  @ajohnmoore on Aug 6, 2015,

Torres was signed by the Cubs as an international free agent during the 2013 international signing period out of Venezuela. He has been very impressive in his full season debut so far this year, hitting .307/.370/.403 in 96 games. Drawing rave reviews from scouts and his performance in full season ball as an 18 year old, he has absolutely shot up prospect lists this year. Now, Torres is a legitimate top 50 prospect in all of baseball according to most prognosticators. He was listed at #25 midseason here on Minor League Ball, #28 for Baseball America, #36 on MLB Pipeline, and #50 with Baseball Prospectus.

Checking in at 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, Torres' listed height and weight looks fairly accurate. It’s a thin frame and to me he looked athletic enough to be able to stick at shortstop long term.

I have heard very good things about Torres’ ability on both sides of the ball. What stood out most to me in the game I saw was his defensive ability at short. In the game I saw he didn’t make any highlight reel plays, but he just made everything look so smooth and easy. The most difficult play he made in the game I saw was where he had to range to his right and make an off balance throw to first to nail the runner. He showed off impressive arm strength on this play and it looked like an arm that should play as a shortstop.

It looks like Torres still has a ways to go with his stick. I’ve heard good reports about his approach at the plate, but the night I saw him he swung at the first pitch nearly every time with a very aggressive approach. However, I’m not going to make any rash judgements about his approach after only seeing 4 at-bats as that is the epitome of a short sample size. It did still look like he has potential to be a solid contributor with the bat one day at the Major League level.

His swing is smooth and level with good bat speed and it should allow him to hit for a good batting average. While Torres doesn’t have much power right now, it looks like he could develop into a guy who can hit 15 home runs at the major league level one day with added strength.

While, one game isn’t nearly enough to write a full report on a guy, Gleyber did show some very impressive tools. It looks like he has the potential for all five tools to be average, above average or even some plus. This guy is far and away the most impressive prospect I’ve seen all year in the Midwest League.

My point is, it isn't some huge stretch of a prediction. Maybe he can't maintain a .250 average. He has more power than most current shortstops. Nobody is comparing Crawford to Jeter. And some Cub fans are trying to replace Russell already anyway. Go prospects go!
