It'll MOSTLY stop when the season starts....with the exception of a magician here, a penguin there....The pressure and intensity of the season will be there and provide plenty of edge to the whole team. For now, it's spring training...and I think he is trying to create a loose environment.

That said, the season can't start soon enough for me. I'm not really into the "sillyness" of all the Maddon "schtick".

When I take my department our for lunch during the week....and then next week our social media and website engagement numbers are down....do I look like a fool for doing something fun with my employees?

No. But morale remains high at the company and you look at the big picture; happy employees normally do 'better' over a period of time.

Even more so...these are mostly kids in their young to mid 20's living the dream of playing a kid's game. Let them have fun.

Everyone pretends to enjoy workplace lunches because talking up free food like its the greatest honor one can be given is a touchstone of American culture, but most people deep down would gladly pay the $10 to eat by themselves. Joe Maddon makes millions, as does pretty much everyone on his team. Also, they're in-shape twenty-somethings playing baseball for a living. If they're so miserable that they give two shits that their manager looks quirky from time-to-time, then they should reevaluate their priorities.

And Maddon loves that people are calling him goofy. That's what he wants. He would rather people focus on him. It's certainly arguable whether it makes a difference, but he's definitely accomplishing what he set out to accomplish.
