In recent years past, I was excited to see the young stars play in Spring. Last year Spring Training was exciting, as watching guys like Bryant, Russell, Schwarber, Soler, and Baez was the most intriguing aspect of watching spring games. But now that they have so many good players established at the major league level, that has changed for me. Sure I want to see Almora and Contreras, but I hate seeing guys taking over in the middle innings for a player I want to see bat again. I hate to see scrub pitchers screwing up and giving up runs that cost them a game, even if it doesn't really matter. It's real different watching spring games now.

I thought this thread would be about the greatest team of all-time sucking in spring training with a 1-7 record.

Thanks,Theo!

Yesterday, I realized I didn't park my truck in the garage and it had dew on it in the morning. What a disaster!

I see your negativity has survived the winter. I thought the "One and done" thread you started before the playoffs began might be the last negative post from you for some time, but you have carried your Debbie Downer ways into 2016. The Cubs are actually 1-8 at this point Jimmy, not 1-7. Are they the greatest team ever? better than the 1927 Yankees? Hell no. But they should compete for a title in 2016. But feel free to jump over to the South side and root on the Sox. They are 5-3 in spring training games!

No. Ironic is the fact that Regular Reader hates Blackish.

Normally, I discount all spring training. Look at outing by pitchers, such as Jake going 2 innings, strike out 4. Nice outing, stuff should be there.

HOWEVER, one teams manager has said they are trying to win in order to get off to a good start.

When the plan was to trade off players to rebuild the farm system (Maholm, Dempster, Feldman, Hammel, etc) and tank to get better draft picks, of course the team was not going to win a pennant in the first few years. The fact that they drafted well and picked up outstanding players like Arrieta and Russell in trades as well as drafting and developing players as quickly as they did, to allow them to win 97 games, the Wild Card and NLDS series in 2015, was really impressive. I see the team with their most recent additions as a legit contender, so where is the room for complaints? They are right on schedule.

All I'm going to say is 5 years is an eternity for a guy like me. I wanted them to have a good team in April, than if they suck by mid season, get rid of some talent and stock the farm system. Theo's plan was to suck all year and get a high draft pick.

The days of salary dumps and restocking of the farm system are over. The team is contending now and the sell-off days are over.

We're all suppose to hate the plan because Jimmy is going to die soon.

So Elmhurst Steve woke up and decided "I want to make a post saying the Cubs have good players" and this is the best he came up with.

I'm delighted at how well things have gone so far. Don't get me wrong, there are several moves I disagreed with, that the Cubs have made. I hated the Edwin Jackson signing, would have signed Shields or Liriano rather than Lester and Span and Zimmerman, rather than Heyward (and not brought back Fowler, as Span would have taken over CF with Soler remaining in RF) but all in all, the team Theo has put together is exceptional. It is a true contender. The plan was a good one and very well executed.

Imagine a starting rotation of Arrieta, Liriano, Zimmerman, Lackey (I strongly agreed with that move) and either Hendricks or Hammel. Schwarber, Span and Soler in the outfield. Rizzo, Baez (I wouldn't have spent the money on Zobrist) Russell and Bryant on the infield. Plus about 100 million or more saved in salary.

Are you suggesting that there's a direct causal relationship between those two things?
