Hendrix

CBGB's era Talking Heads

Uncle Tupelo

Stevie Ray

Old 97's at Lounge Ax

VU, but only to be able to say I was there.

Bowlie Weekender kicked off the whole residential music fest and had a great lineup of bands
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowlie_Weekender

Finally made it over to ATP for the Autechre curated version, but the first 3 were stellar as well, before they
veered away from having much in the way of edm:

I actually did see Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Ice T, BDP/KRS et al back in nineteen ninety motherfuckin one. Great shows. Hip hop shows seemed to always be all ages.

Surprised they didn't have Eleventh Dream Day performing at that one as well. They had most of the band there already. Maybe Janet Bean couldn't make it. Saw EDD a few times at Empty Bottle. Good, high-energy live-band.

Chicago heavy-lineups for a couple of years. Fred Armisen MC'd the Shellac/2002 ATP.

I never liked them. To me, they came off as a Neil Young & Crazy Horse tribute band.

Rick and Figi could play, there's no doubt about that. But you can't fake real emotion. Screaming doesn't get it done. I always thought Rick was a guy who was trying to put across emotion that he didn't really have. And if you saw him on a bill with guys who could really express their feelings through their music, like the Little brothers in Precious Wax Drippings or Tim Rutili, he just paled in comparison. I'm sure I'd get a lot of argument about that though. EDD was pretty beloved back in the day.

Tim Rutili's Califone seemed to be playing on the bill of about every 5th vaguely alterna (rock/country/Flaming Lips) show I attended in the early 2K's around Chicago.

Wonderful band, amazing live. Here they are covering an old Psychic TV track:

I didn't catch EDD the first go-around; they did and might still do periodic reunion shows post-2K/Bean-Rizzo break-up. They'd pack out the Empty Bottle whenever they did get together for a show or two or three.

I would go back in time and smack my younger self in the face for uttering this memorable quote, "gonna skip Nirvana at the Aragon and will just catch them next time they're in town."

Pretty sure I had a chance to see them at Metro before that and didn't go.

Janet was the best thing about EDD. Freakwater is great. Like the Carter sisters. Dave Gay back there thumping his bass. Dave played a couple live gigs with us in the Sonars. He's a great guy. I first met him when he was playing in Incoming Wounded with Tom Billings. Then a guy named Stu Coy took over for Billings on lead vocals and they changed the name of the band to Oncoming Traffic. Stu had attended Sullivan High School with a bunch of my friends but none of them really hung around with him. I was a pretty good frontman with good stage presence but nothin' like motherfuckin' Stu Coy. That son of a gun was larger than life. Sadly he took his own life before he reached thirty. Here's an article about him from the Reader: http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/st ... oid=881302

I'm sittin' at a bus stop
on a bench outside a Mr. Submarine
My rockin' arms are folded by
the radio that's blastin' on my knees
My clothing defies fashion
My hair is oily
And my blood it runs too warm
And I can't fake it anymore
I see people watch me acting strange
I know they hear me when I'm talking
But they look away--I'm someone who it's hard not to ignore
And I was always waitin' 'round
for someone just to take my hand and pull me from the sea
Up to the shore--But I ain't waiting anymore
- Stu Coy
