becoming the spring sensation, 24 Ab w/ 10 hits, 2 HR. yeah, Its a small sample but the only sample, but his hitting his been off of primary starting pitchers.

Looked up more info on the guy, 22 years old and not many have the story of being born in the US (NY) then moving to the DR so his dad could work at a baseball academy. With that said, going to go out on the limb and say he is fundamentally sound. He is 22, so its not like some 19 year old is showing some pop but he might be showing enough to get another call up and see if he can do this when the lights are on and the off speed junk comes flying at you.

Leary might have made it if his dad was a baseball instructor and he got to take swings everyday too!

This is BA's take..... for the #10 Cubs minor league prospect:

10. Jeimer Candelario, 3b

Born: Nov. 24, 1993. B-T: B-R. Ht.: 6-1. Wt.: 210. Signed: Dominican Republic, 2010. Signed by: Jose Serra/Marino Encarnacion.

Background: Born in the U.S., Candelario grew up in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, and signed as a 16-year-old. He ranked in the organization’s Top 10 Prospects twice before reaching high Class A in 2014, where he experienced his first roadblock as a pro and didn’t handle failure well. He bounced back in 2015, reaching Double-A Tennessee and leading the organization with 35 doubles.

Scouting Report: Candelario is the Cubs’ best defensive infielder thanks to a plus arm, soft hands and smooth actions. His instincts and internal clock maximize his average range at third base, and he has the agility to handle slow rollers. He’s a switch-hitter whose swing and approach remain consistent from both sides of the plate, with the ability to use the whole field and hit for solid-average power. He covers the plate enough to make consistent contact and successfully became more aggressive this year, which paid off against advanced pitchers who are around the strike zone more often.

The Future: Blocked by Kris Bryant at third base, Candelario could still be an internal option if Bryant winds up moving to the outfield. A likely candidate to be added to the 40-man roster this winter, Candelario should return to Tennessee to start 2016 and profiles as a solid regular at third, if not a star.

Sounds like a kid who literally grew up at a baseball academy. Plate coverage, fluid, solid, etc....which is all great....but some of that natural talent always needs to be there, can only get so good by practicing.

I cannot tell you how many times I have read "Cubs best defensive fielder" attributed to a prospect in the last couple of years. Either someone is exaggerating or doesn't know the meaning of best

Addys defense has been hyped and the UZR actually supported in last year. Especially for the 2nd half. So, maybe all the times Good Dolphin heard it was because it was correct....thus many people say it.

Always nice to get the "SCOUT'S" view on minor league prospects... unbiased, concise and accurate.

That's because they're all the best. Remember when Corey Patterson was Willie Mays?

Hah. I recall five tool being talked about all the time with Corey. All I know is they tried to turn a fast guy into a home run hitter. Didn't work out so well.

When I hear "great defensive player", I immediately think the guy can't hit.

That's really the opposite of what happened. They tried to turn a home run hitter into an OBP guy simply because he was little and fast.

Patterson may have been the most infuriating Cub prospect ever. He simply wouldn't stop swinging at eye-high fastballs. He was interviewed at one point and asked about it, and his response can be paraphrased as "I grew up swinging at them and I like swinging at them and I don't see why I should stop swinging at them."

I was a big Patterson fan when he first came up, and after that I washed my hands of him, since he was obviously a dumbshit would would never improve.

As for Candelario, nice story, hope he makes MLB for more than a cup of coffee, but he's not going to get more than 50 PA as a Cub unless Bryant wrecks a knee. If he has a good first half at AAA, he is going to get traded at the deadline for pitching depth.

Baez reminds me of Patterson...lots of talent and potential combined with no discipline at the plate. Has Baez taken any steps forward at the plate?

...and when you say "THEY" which of "THEM" is still even remotely connected to the team from Ownership down?

20 AB 4 H 7 K The answer is NO

Might even say he has regressed.

Power, defense, Speed. ......but no Avg...

I compare him to a golfer. He tries to overswing and does nothing. Then he calms down, takes some easy swings, makes contact, nice shots, but he still now wants to combine his nice shot with all his might....and thats Baez.

I get it with all the hope and iys almost too obvious about what he needs to do, slowing it down...or as the said last year...lower half should be quiet.

Even if he starts in the minors, he needs to work on it right away....

The only thing I can say is that he hasnt swung so hard that he corkscrews himself into the ground. If you feel thats an improvement, great. I dont

I think someone needs to sit him down and tell him that a good defensive SS who is light hitting but makes contact can stay on an MLB roster for a long time.

Willie Bloomquist just retired after 14 years of being the model definition of a guy just above replacement level to keep an MLB job. 14 years without being sent back to the minors except for the occasional DL rehab game or three, only played in more than 100 games in a year twice, career WAR of 2.7 per Baseball Reference.

And $17m of salary. Not a bad life.
