Yup. This will go away quick. The White Sox are a better team today and going forward than they were yesterday, in my opinion.

It's humorous and sad at the same time to me that it took for this to happen for the national sports media to talk about baseball. Baseball gets the hockey treatment nowadays.

Who can think about baseball at a time like this? The Bears traded a guy!

A mediocre baseball executive vs. one of the best pitchers in baseball. That's probably not a good place for Kenny to make a stand. Mr. Reinsdorf may be accepting a resignation soon and it won't be Chris Sale's.

I think the GM and Prez should stay out of the clubhouse unless there is unique situation. I could see Kenny being a regular in there.

When I first heard that Adam LaRoche was retiring because the White Sox wanted him to reduce the time his 14-year-old son spent in their clubhouse, I thought A) he was crazy to walk away from $13 million over such an issue and B) that the White Sox were crazy to make it an issue at all.

After speaking with major-league sources who explained LaRoche's thinking, I gained a better understanding over why he would make such a decision; his son, Drake, 14, has been his constant companion for years, as detailed in this Washington Post story and this one from the Chicago Tribune.

And, after speaking with White Sox president Ken Williams, who asked LaRoche to "dial it back" on the amount of time that Drake spent with the team, I gained a better understanding of the team's thinking as well.

But not a complete understanding.

Would Williams have raised the issue if LaRoche, 36, was coming off a big offensive season instead of one in which he batted .207 with a .634 OPS and 12 home runs in 484 plate appearances? Don't think so.

Also: Why did Williams raise the issue in the middle of an upbeat camp, with the Sox preparing to compete in the hotly contested AL Central, rather than establish a new policy before the players even arrived in Arizona?

Williams said the team did not change its policy but acknowledged to FOX Sports that he asked LaRoche not to bring Drake to the park 100 percent of the time, as he has in the past, or even 50 percent of the time.

"You tell me where in this country can you bring your child to work every day?" Williams asked.

That is a fair question. And it seemed even fairer to me after a few players who read Williams' comments sent me texts acknowledging to me that he had a point.

No one -- and I mean no one -- says that Drake LaRoche is anything less than a great kid; Williams made a point to me of saying, "Everyone loves this young man." But it's easy to envision scenarios where a player might not be comfortable with a 14-year-old in the clubhouse.

Maybe a player has a bad day at home and the last thing he wants to see is someone else's son. Maybe a player has to think twice about what he says with a 14-year-old in the vicinity. Maybe a player goes to grab post-game food and Drake is loading up his plate first.

Those are just some possibilities; I'm sure there are others. Here's the thing, though: LaRoche is one of the most well-liked players in the sport. His teammates rose to his defense and challenged Williams in a heated clubhouse meeting, according to multiple sources. As best as I can determine, the players did not consider Drake a problem.

It is not too late for the issue to be resolved; LaRoche told the White Sox on Tuesday that he would take a "couple of days" before making a final decision on retirement. LaRoche has yet to comment publicly, but both he and Williams seem dug in, perhaps too dug in to compromise.

Williams told me that he informed LaRoche that the Sox want "to make sure we give ourselves every opportunity to focus on a daily basis on getting better." Well, if focus is the primary concern, Drake LaRoche's presence in the clubhouse is the last thing the White Sox should be worrying about in mid-March.

I'm all for teaching your kid how to act around adults. My dad, who came to the US in the 1950s, decided that one way to make sure I wanted to go to college was to drag my 11 year old ass out of bed at 4:30am for 8 weeks each summer and have me come to his diner and work a 12 hour day with him.

Oh how cute, kid at work with his dad. No, I got to spend each morning cleaning cases of lettuce and carrots each morning surrounded by a bunch of functionally illiterate guys (mostly brothers and cousins of each other) from Jackson, TN who were incredibly loyal to my dad and lived at 49th and Federal, and each lunchtime busing tables. Only after 2pm did I get to chill out a little and watch the cash register while my dad got ready to go to the bank, and we left at 6pm after the Kennedy would start to clear up. I learned a lot of lessons, like why we had a cigarette vending machine, who Fred Roti was, and how bigoted some of our customers (and occasionally an employee until my dad would bounce them out on their ass) of all ethnicity were. And that everybody's equal except when somebody like the water inspector wants to write a personal check you let them even though the sign says "no personal checks."

So, if Adam wants to bring his kid to work once a week, cool. Hang out during pregame, have a couple of hot dogs, whatever. But if it's every day, then the kid had better be doing something legitimate for at least an hour or two each day, like helping the locker room guys hang clean uniforms in the lockers.

Because the White Sox are just out-of-touch enough to not know that by doing this they created a highly shareable, opinionated front in the oppression Olympics. You gave the white, southern, inbred Christians a chance to point at themselves as the TRUE VICTIMS (black team prez ratchets this to 1000x) and act like their family values are under attack. Naturally the whole dumb clan of them is standing right in line: Sale, Eaton, I'm sure Frazier too would #familymatters this shit if he wasn't brand new to the org and angling for some fat Jerry bucks while he begins his AL-accelerated late career decline. Notice how Jose Abreu, who was forcibly embargoed from his entire family by the weight of US foreign policy, doesnt have much to say about any of this. He's learned quite a bit of English and I'm sure he has thoughts on it that wouldn't be too kind to LaRoche.

KW thought he'd ask LaRoche to tone it down and LaRoche would say "Oh okay boss I get how this is kinda weird and creepy, how about we just do home games and maybe a few games when were in the south?" and that'd be fine and it'd be over. They'd give Drake LaRoche the inverse Hawk Harrelson treatment for 2016. Instead LaRoche took it as an attack on his lifestyle and riled the whole base into a frenzy about how great a dad this guy must be for being way too close to his kid.

Baseball has a white southern inbred Christian problem. This Blaine Boyer dope took the Minnesota Twins on a field trip to the Creation Museum, and not as a joke? Get the fuck out.

I was just about to say that I don't believe the claim by Tyler Dunnington (in the MLB section thread) that he's heard multiple teammates and coaches say they wanted to kill gay people--after all, I've never heard a single person in my life express that desire--but maybe I'm just blessed to not have found my way into those circles.
