There are some Cubs fans who feel that a sustained run is imminent if not promised for the Cubs. That is simply not the case. There could easily be a scenario (Mack) where the Cubs win 92 or 93 games next year, and miss the playoffs entirely. The Cardinals and Pirates aren't going anywhere. The Dodgers have an endless supply of payroll and the Giants are still really damn good. The Mets are great and play in a division that is worse than the Cubs do. And then, speaking of the NL East, you have the Nationals. That team still has a ton of talent and could put together a great run next season. You also saw the flip side of that with how the Nats did this year. Now I'm not saying that it is very likely for the Cubs finish under .500 next year, but you get a couple of guys that don't like eachother (this happens on all teams, even the beloved Cubbies) and throw in a couple of injuries, and an 80 win team next year is possible. Again, not very likely, but it could happen.

I think this year's playoffs maybe showed some people that the Cubs have quite a bit of work to do in order to become a legit Championship contender. Next year's (or 2017's) playoffs are promised to nobody.

Thanks to the wild card, the chance to get into the playoffs and win a World Series title is much improved. I'll take 14 straight playoff appearances and be happy. .

I was at the game yesterday, sitting behind the plate about 15 rows up. Hammel looked like he was in mid-season form, which is not a good thing. Gave up a pair of meatballs to Cano.

I think they trade some of their AA depth for another #3-level starter in July, and throw Hammel into the deal to eat innings for the acquiring team.
