wouldn't read access be all someone with a prurient, voyeuristic interest in the data behind this site need? if they got/had that, why try for admin. they could sit back and watch the data without anyone knowing.

the 35 million searches sounds like someone attempting a buffer overflow exploit--you lock up one of the services on the box (mysql or nginx in this case) and that sometimes can open up exploits to gain root.

Explain this to me like I am a toddler.

So, the website uses a database. One way to get at the database is to try something like overloading the website in the hopes that you get something, like a log message that outputs the database user name. I don't know how you would get the password though. If you have that, probably the first thing you go for are private messages as you have a good chance of garnering personal information, like when DT was drunk that one night and started sending me his phone number and dick pictures. You can also grab email addresses and passwords, which could in turn be used to attempt login into other sites, like banks, etc. Its small game though.
