The guy played GG (actual GG not fake Jeter GG) level defense with good power and good/great basestealing for the better part of 10 full seasons. He's in very rare company when you look at his counting stats.

I'd never considered Rollins as a serious candidate for the HOF, but I then again I never believed Garciaparra was clean, I always think that Renteria was above average at best and Trammell overloved (I always felt that Whitaker was the better half of that duo).

I agree with all of that, but it still doesn't make Rollins a Hall of Famer. He's marginally better than Shawon Dunston. In fact, I believe Dunston has a higher career average. Not sure. They're close anyway. Think of how silly it would be to call Dunston a Hall of Famer. Hawk is a lunatic.

Id put Rollins just below Hall of Fame level. Maybe he'll get some love for being part of the first Philly Championship in like 30 years.

I dont think Dunston is a good comp though. Rollins hit about 80 more homeruns and had 250 more stolen bases in less years played. Also, a .325 OBP vs Dunston's .296

Rollins is far less than a Hall of Famer. Yeah, he's better than Dunston. But he's closer to Dunston than to a legit Hall of Famer. Different position, but he's the equivalent of Ray Durham.

I think you underrate Rollins, but Ive always been a fan of his so I may be a little biased.

He had a five year stretch where he was one of the best all around players in baseball.


Cant say the same for Durham or Dunston.

I think you're underrating Durham. And Dunston was just a good big league ballplayer that lasted a long time. But we're talking about the Hall of Fame and a guy we both agree was just an okay player has a higher batting average than a supposed borderline Hall of Famer?

OBP is more important and includes BA.

Durham was real good for a long time, he just didnt get up to that MVP level like Rollins briefly did.

Dunston was significantly below both guys,imo

Hall of Famers with batting averages lower than Dunston

Harmon Killebrew
Luis Aparicio
Brooks Robinson
Carlton Fisk


All of them had much higher OBP than Dunston though

Come on, now. Fisk and Carter were catchers. Robinson and Aparicio are in on their defense. All the other guys had prodigious power.

Rollin OPS+ is a few points higher than Dunston. Just the fact that we can make a reasonable comparison of the two should tell you that Rollins isn't a Hall of Famer. Rollins isn't close to a guy like Bobby Grich who should never sniff the Hall of Fame.

I dont think Rollins is a hall of famer. I think he's in the Bernie Wiliams Hall of Very good But not Hall of Fame level.


The MLB Hall of Fame is all kinds of fucked up now though.

For almost the entirety of Rollins career (16 seasons, a lot of seasons) he was among the best defenders in the game. A big part of his HoF candidacy revolves around his glove.

Baseball reference, puts Rollins in the category of likely HOF, but not deserving.
