We'll probably never have a Catholic president!

We've already had one.

Absolutely. I know that here in the US those poor catholics simply live the most persecuted life. It's just plain unsafe to be a Catholic. It must be difficult living you life knowing that your safety is threatened every step you take. It's simply terrifying.

Hey you guys remember back when Catholics weren't allowed to own property or vote?
Those were tough days.
Not as bad as when they weren't allowed to eat where they wanted or drink from public water bubblers. That was terrible.

So now you put up a strawman rather than answer the question.

Carry on. At least you didn't out yourself as a bigot like Brick did.

You guys remember back when they rounded up all those catholics into internment camps?

And when they were hit with fire hoses and dogs?

And all those guys who grabbed catholics and put them on boats to bring them to an unfamiliar land and force them into slavery? Tough days.

I'm really not concerned about potential bigotry toward catholics. Something tells me they're going to be just fine.

Us Catholics will be fine. Even with bigots like me.

The biggest problem with the Catholics is that some of them think that gay people should be treated as an equal person with equal rights.

ignorance of the discrimination your own families dealt with is pretty disturbing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Cath ... ted_States

good thing those anti-catholic sentiments are pretty much gone today.

That type of ignorance lives on here thanks to Brick, Darkside and Elmhurst Steve, as a way of showing that bigotry is something that we need to always be vigilant against.

I mean when movies like end of days and dogma are around its nearly unsafe to walk the streets as a Catholic.

But hey, what if a Muslim is forced to get a job in a bacon factory!

Give me the latest example of how you were discriminated against as a Catholic. Couldn't get a cab? Was refused the right to vote? Pulled over by a cop because you were driving in a non-Catholic neighborhood after dark or for driving a car that a Catholic "shouldn't be able to afford"? The slavery your family was forced to endure? Was made to look silly in a Kevin Smith movie? the HORROR!

I think that you and Regular Reader should be commended for pointing all of the bigotry found in the MS law. Not just some of it.

You are both great board members.

The English forced my ancestors off their land and starved them to death...about 500,000 of them. Starving, many of them came here in the late 1800s and were met with prejudice and not allowed in "proper society." My wife's family is mainline protestant from Boston and the family occasionally jokes about how the Irish were servants and nothing else. My MIL would have been kicked out of the family for marrying a filthy Irishman. Thankfully Chicago had so many filthy Irish that they pretty much created their own society and became successful in mainstream business. Not so in most parts of the country. Thankfully discrimination today consists of having slanderous books and movies made about us. However there are plenty of places in the world where Catholics would be murdered openly if they tried to practice their religion. But we needed worry about them.

Irish, Italians, Polish......all endured times of prejudice but were able to forge ahead and create better lives for themselves and their families.

To be clear, I'm just asking you about how you were discriminated against because of your catholicism. I can start a new topic if you feel that is too far off topic to be included in this thread.

I'll wait a bit before I start a new topic so the question won't be considered off-topic.
However, I would say that conversation normally meanders from topic to topic, and ancillary conversation will eventually work it's way back to the original topic. It's a healthy way to discuss things among adults.

I once worked with a born again who was mortified about my reading "The Da Vinci Code". She said it was full of lies.
I said "well yeah, its a work of fiction, so..."
She told me she'd pray for me.
If she did, further proof that god doesn't listen to prayer. I'm still a dickhead.

Yeah, did some time in central Florida. Agony. Shockingly rednecky.
Lived in Charleston IL for 4 years. Well... technically 30 or so months.
Other than that... no.

I travel a lot for work. I'm not an expert in Southern culture by any means, but I don't advertise I'm Catholic when I'm down there. As a northerner you are suspect, as a catholic northerner you are completely alien. I bring that up b/c I highly doubt catholics have any influence in state politics down there.
