I know that a station that serves as the radio home of a team isn't always going to be 100% objective in their coverage of that team, which is fine. I expect that. But aside from the way Hub acted when he did postgame for the Bears I don't know if I have ever heard such complete and total ass lickage of an organization as I have heard from WSCR towards the Cubs.

Bernstein set up camp in Theo's colon on day 1, but the way I have heard guys like Spiegel, Goff, and Laurence regard the Cubs with awe and wonder makes WGN's Andrea Darlas saying "we" when referring to the Blackhawks seem positively hostile towards the home team.

I don't listen to sports-talk radio, either WSCR or AM1000, nearly as much as I used to (I used to listen practically all day long to a combination of WSCR and AM1000), and even less when it's not football season, so I can't imagine how over-the-top it must seem to people who listen more often.

I am ok with homerism if it is well grounded. Sure, it's over the top on WSCR, but they are trying to make good on their new baby. Since the Cubs are a hyped team that seems to be living up to expectations, I am ok if they get all gooey over them.

I have to ask, what did you expect?

funny thing is I dont think WSCR is really embedded with the Cubs. Jessie Rogers (ESPN) is actually a guy who knows the players, he knows the team, he can get any player to be a guest with him. Its what I expected them to do with Grote, make him a real part of them team and KNOW the players. WSCR doesnt have that...yet.

Come on, really?

They had that White Sox deal for 10 years, that only the Sox could be a in a partnership with their flagship station and constantly be bickering with them as an organization.

It is true that everything is coming up roses so far and there is not much to be negative or critical about. It's just such an about face from their typical attitude (with the exception of Laurence who is a toadying little weasel anyway) which makes it sound even more over-the-top and disingenuous to me.

Bruce isn't hanging with players. He knows many, he know Cubs, Sox, Coaches, etc. Great source, but Jessie sits around with these guys and asks "Hey, did you go out last night?"

Remember, many of these guys are 25 year old guys, who like to go out and party, thats what they do, they dont want to talk about your kids soccer team, your golf game, your office, taxes, etc. That OFF THE RECORD conversation helps talk to a guy later or lets them drop their guard.

Bruce, The Roto Chicken, etc dont do that.

You make it sound like Jessie is 25. The dude has got to be close to 50. I have no doubt he hangs out with the players but it's because he poses no threat to "out" them on anything. Jessie is just a younger-than-Bruce jock sniffer who wants to be friends with the players. He's so vanilla that they let him hang but don't give him anything.

Not sure about the homerism but the reverence Bernstein holds for the broadcasting rights of the Cubs is really crazy.

I understand it's a big team to have but he speaks as if its the pinnacle of his career to be working on the team's station.

Another guy in denial of his Cubs fandom, claiming to a Sox fan as his version of revolting against his parents. Thats the Northshore version of being a rebel!

That's fair. Here's the real problem. They are so overtly negative and cynical about everything, so you're not used to hearing positive coverage. I had to stop listening to Bernsie because he barely allows for you to enjoy sports. At the end of his show you find yourself wondering why you would ever watch college basketball, a regular season game, or a sport that causes head trauma. And God forbid if you are a Penn State fan....

The Score tried to do homer radio with the Sox and the fans hated them for it. It's just a different mentality.

I tried listening to S & G today for the first time in months.

I was really hoping for a good listen - what with the live Wrigleyville remote, Opening Night and all...

Had to tune out 45 minutes in. What's wrong with these two?

If you are Ricketts, how can you be pleased with this network?

There are just too many unlikable characters to deal with.

During the golden age of the Score they were proud not to have broadcast rights to any team.

I don't think it can be doubted that partnership deals with various teams has skewed coverage of those teams.

I liked the voice of the fans. I liked that a goof could ask Riley if he's shave his head for a win and not have to think twice about the consequences.

I think that's true. There is a difference in the mentalities of the typical Sox fan and the typical Cub fan. (RPB always takes this as me suggesting the Sox fan is smarter. Not the case. The Sox fan is just a negative douchebag, while the Cub fan tends to be an optimistic sap.) The Sox fan doesn't want to be fed a line of happy horseshit. But there is a difference between covering the team fairly and honestly and just being negative for the sake of being an asshole, like bernstein simply dismissing Jimmy Rollins as "bad, just bad" before he has ever played a game for the Sox. He may be bad. He's old as hell. But it's phony to call him bad at the same time you're trumpeting the greatness of Addison Russell, who frankly looks far more overmatched at the plate than a 37 year old Rollins.

An appropriate description of Bernstein. And it has infected much of the station.

Before they had Maddon on today, Goff and Spiegel took a call from an old guy with no axe to grind. He asks the 2 if either of them have seen Mini Wrigley Field in Lockport. Goff immediately goes full Bernstein on the old dude and asks, "Why would I want to do that? I have the real thing 5 minutes away." The old guy then makes an analogy about how many times he's had to lie about a sick wife in order to get out of work to attend Cubs opening day in years past. It wasn't that hard to follow and Goff kept being a prick. I get it when meatheads call. By all means, open fire. But this wasn't a case of meathead. It was a case of nice old man. PTFB. Nice work, Ja-Goff.

The Happy Wanderer scene from The Sopranos encapsulates perfectly the Sox fan and his reaction to Cub fans.

Agree, Spiegs has been the only one recognizing it and fighting it.

If Goff would revolt, he and Spiegs would finally have something in common, but Jason isnt willing to really FIGHT THE POWERS

Jason both loves and fears Dan Bernstein. He'll never turn on him.

In fact, Jason wants to go back to Dan once Terry retires.

Now even Terry is licking Theos sack. The interview this afternoon was disgusting. Terry tried to "congratulate" Theo three times. Finally Theo said "we finished 3rd in our division last year"

It was ABC's Rafer Weigel who was wearing a Blackhawks tie that belonged to his late father. Bernstein had a conniption about how unprofessional it was.

No. Not according to Bernstein. But, as is often the case with him, he's a hypocrite. When the Cubs got Theo Epstein, Dan, with an erection and in full fan boy enthusiasm said out loud, "I wonder what synagogue Theo will attend in Chicago?".

I don't mind if the writers, sportscasters and radio guys are fans as long as they don't protect the teams because of it. You can be critical and still be a fan. Some aren't in this city.

Yeah, even Jim Memolo, who worked for WGN, wasn't as sycophantic as these boobs.

It's funny, my son reminded me how last year Bernstein was bitching that the Cubs, particularly Soler, were getting screwed by umps calling borderline strikes. Now all I see is Soler swinging at pitches 3 feet off the plate.
