Between Dan's column today (http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2016/04/11/ ... ese-bulls/) and K.C.'s post-mortem, it looks like Gar Forman is being positioned as the scapegoat for the Bulls (er, in Dan's case, the one non-player who deserves any ire). I still doubt they fire him this year, but I guess it's his ass on the line next year, so whatever.

It's hilarious though how much Bernstein continues to hold his tongue regarding Paxson. Look at this crap:
Quote:
So what of executive vice president of basketball operations John Paxson then, you rightly ask?

I wish I had a satisfying answer for you. I have always felt that Paxson was as intelligent a basketball mind as I have encountered, from hearing him guest-host shows on 670 The Score and broadcast games on radio to my many conversations with him as he white-boarded the opponent’s playbook as an assistant coach.

That easygoing guy has since turned reclusive in the ensuing years, his public presence dwindling into an occasional appearance that features blandishments and generalities instead of the candor and detail we once appreciated. We want him to be in there somewhere, but this Paxson is now Prince Hamlet, wandering the cold and darkened ramparts of a wind-swept Castle Reinsdorf, seeing ghosts. He may emerge soon, and we hope he’ll answer for this year’s pitiful performance.
So you liked hearing him talk to the media and this convinced you he's competent at his job? How dissimilar to a recently fired Bears GM! Earlier he spends a large part of the article claiming that players and coaches saying the right things didn't matter given the performance on the court, but now you'd have more confidence in this team if someone like wise John was the one whispering sweet basketball nothings from the podium? I also love how Dan was able to discern his basketball genius from "many conversations" during Paxson's whopping one season as an assistant coach in the mid 90s.

Paxson has spent 13 years in this position, more than anyone in the league who has not won a title. Thibs' firing was justified in part by Dan and others because 5 years was a long time for a coach not to win in the anything. Why doesn't this standard apply to front offices? Paxson's as much to blame for this mess as Forman. Even in the event he wasn't taking active part in the decision making (a generous and unlikely assumption in his favor), his hand-picked GM has displayed even more incompetence at his job than that GM's hand-picked coach.

I'll give it a read.

The Bulls deserve this. For people to complain that Thibs tried too hard and pushed players too much in the regular season, well this is what you get. And this is the more common NBA scenario. Most NBA coaches have a short tenure and cannot get players to try hard every night especially on defense.

I am on board with making a championship a priority. However, if you don't make it to the playoffs, well you're never going to win a championship.

Here's thinking that Pax is the primary problem with the organization. Maybe Reinsdorf could higher McDonough.

What would Lil Danny have to say if it were Patrick Kane or Derrick Rose choking their coach?

It's a pretty fair article. He properly addresses Paxson at the end.

I still can't believe the front office ran Thibs out of town. Getting players to try hard and play together is really half the battle in sports. The Bulls had so much talent this year and played so far below that talent level. But I have the Hawks/Blues and plenty of baseball to entertain myself. And it appears the Bears are close to becoming a professional organization again.

LTG thinks Hoiberg was a good hire because LTG's eye tests proved that there was better ball movement this year.

Hamlet really isn't a very good analogy but he is relying that anyone reading his work hasn't read the story.

Hamlet was an indecisive twit whose inaction lead to ruination. Paxson is a decisive twit whose actions have lead to ruination.

Being a good "basketball mind" is probably 1/100 of the job of a successful GM or VP, so that's basically a moot point.

Additionally, call me skeptical if I don't automatically consider Paxson to be a great mind simply because Dan Bernstein thinks so. This is a guy who thinks a big vocabulary equates to intelligence and who has been the lapdog of every leadership group in Chicago sports for the last ten years (at least when they started). SYNERGY! YOU'RE GONNA LIKE THIS GUY!

When you bring back the same team as the prior year, and your big move is firing the coach and replacing him with the guy they've been chasing for the last few season, the front-office does put a target on their back. I'm not sure if they publicly stated that they thought this would be a Championship level team, but this has been a front-office that has been patient and a believer in keeping the team together and having a healthy team come playoff time.

Paxson probably has a buffer in Gar though, but to be fair to them, it's hard to change your team once your team is set and paid.

what a bunch of pap....comparing Pax to Hamlet......that might make the Maroon my High School Paper....but this is big time. The real problem is the drafting of Rose and giving us the illusion this guy can lead the Bulls to a title. When he leaves after next year, you have to blow this entire thing up! Pax and Forman are more like Don Quixote and Sancho Panza attacking the Giants of the NBA which are merely imaginary windmills in their minds.

So if that was GarPax evaluation of Hoiberg and he's been anything but that , seems to me they need to be launched as they have zero idea of what they're talking about.

That Hawk clip is special. Can someone tell me how he isn't taking major heat for this? Is it because he's old and farty?

I don't remember if I said it when the hire was made but I don't think Hoiberg was ever a serious candidate for any of the big college jobs. The Bulls infatuation with him was a little strange.

Are players from Latin American countries generally taught to swing or take certain pitches differently than players from North America or Asian countries?

If so, then I don't think there's anything wrong with what he said as it would be a commentary on a style of coaching/teaching. Or if that's just his opinion based on what he's observed after x amount of years of watching MLB I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with that, either.

If their is data that says latin players swing at more high fastballs than American players? I think they might. If it's true, why is it racist as Bernstein's suggests?

This is B&B's agenda to try to get him fired.

Keep in mind, Goff said guys who drink long island's wear skirts. That's clearly sexist but B&B don't replay that clip all the time and ride his ass. They don't ask for Goff to be fired.

My favorite was the logic that the championship winning Warriors speaking with Hoiberg before hiring Kerr was sufficient evidence of his quality. No offers, no formal interviews, or anything, just the mere fact that they talked to each other proves how good he is.

The Bulls infatuation with Hoiberg does look strange until you realize how infatuated Forman and the Bulls have been with so many guys from Iowa State and New Mexico for years: http://www.blogabull.com/2016/2/15/1099 ... -flowchart

The Warriors only spoke to him to inform him that there was no solicitation allowed at Oracle
