Former Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot to death in New Orleans' Lower Garden District on Saturday night following a traffic collision, the coroner's office confirmed.

Smith, 34, was shot after exchanging words with the driver of a Hummer H2 that rear-ended his Mercedes G63 SUV, causing him to strike another vehicle, police said. from ESPN

Might be more to this case than previously thought...
Quote:
New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Michael Harrison held a press conference about the fatal shooting of former Saints defensive end Will Smith on Sunday, including comments about whether Smith and Cardell Hayes, who has been booked on a second-degree murder charge, knew each other before the shooting.

The question arose on Sunday because of lawsuits Hayes filed after the 2005 shooting death of his father. Police officer Billy Ceravolo, who was personally sued along with the City of New Orleans, ate dinner with Smith before the shooting on Saturday night. Ceravolo was not at the scene of the shooting said that he wasn’t aware that he’d been named in the suit.

In addition to that, the Washington Post reported Sunday that Hayes worked security for the Saints at some point when Smith was on the team. Superintendent Harrison said there was no information at this time that suggested the two men knew each other, however.

Hate to say it but it sounds like Will Smith wasn't as innocent. Didn't deserve to die at all, but he wan't an angel in this either. Sounds like the two men were arguing and both men mentioned they had guns and Hayes blasted him first.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/15188999/surveillance-video-shows-hit-run-possibly-involving-smith-former-new-orleans-saints-player-death

Surveillance video from a New Orleans restaurant appears to show a hit-and-run incident between two vehicles matching the descriptions of those driven by former Saints player Will Smith and Cardell Hayes minutes before Smith was shot and killed on Saturday.

The video, which was broadcast Tuesday by ABC's "Good Morning America," appears to show a Mercedes SUV bump the rear of a Hummer near the intersection of Magazine Street and St. Andrew Street, approximately two blocks from where Hayes is accused of shooting and killing Smith around 11:30 p.m. ET.

Smith drove a Mercedes G63 SUV on Saturday night, while Hayes drove a Hummer H2, New Orleans police said.

The surveillance video appears to show the Mercedes bump the Hummer at 11:21 p.m. As the Hummer begins to pull over to the side of the road, the Mercedes veers into the opposite lane before driving away. The Hummer immediately pursues the Mercedes onto Sophie Wright Place; according to New Orleans police, Smith was shot two blocks away near the intersection of Sophie Wright Place and Felicity Street, which is a five-point intersection. ...

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/15186532/cardell-hayes-attorney-suggests-2nd-gun-present-smith-killing

The attorney for the man accused of killing former Saints defensive end Will Smith suggested even more strongly Monday that a possible second gun on the scene could help exonerate Cardell Hayes of second-degree murder.

Attorney John Fuller did not say who he believed had the second gun or whether he thought it had been fired. He also declined to say whether his client plans to claim self-defense. But he insisted Hayes felt threatened, and filed a motion in court to preserve all ballistic evidence.

"It would be safe to say that not only did my client feel threatened, but citizens that were out there on that block felt threatened as well," Fuller said. "And I think the uncovering or unearthing of a second gun will lend itself to the defense of Mr. Hayes.

"Once everything becomes apparent, you'll see why I'm saying that my client, legally speaking, is not guilty of second-degree murder." ...

This wouldn't have happened if they drove hot hatches.

You're right; I think in that case they'd have shot themselves.
