I feel a big part of the problem is that many children do not have both parents in their lives or have parents who look the other way too often. In any case, when I see a picture of a child that way, it is pretty clear that nothing good is going to come of it. If it was an adult posing that way, I would also be concerned.

As for the Cheney picture, well the guy did get shot while hunting. So there's that.

no amount of parenting can give kids all of the skills needed to cope with the world outside their home and the people who populate that world.

The problems people have with coping and adjusting to adulthood in their late teens years are a result of failures of our education system when those kids were in elementary school. By the time a kid gets to high school, it's often mostly too late--

and then when they do fuck up, instead of treating them as incomplete adults who were given short-shrift by the educational system and need social/educational/economic outlets/opportunities, we 'try them as adults' and throw away the key. out of sight, out of mind.

I'm more than content to let this matter play out and see what develops over the next few days, weeks, months.

But, if I see neck ink, hat turned to the right & a plain white-T on a teen-early 20's guy, I'm automatically going to be skeptical of the "protesters" stories.

Certainly justice needs to play itself out. The fact that protesters are out already is just a sign that they don't expect a full and fair investigation of the facts. Hard to blame them.

If you want to discipline the officers for high fiving (If there's evidence) I have no issue with that. Beyond that this case seems pretty clear. This troubled kid pulled out a gun and got shot. There is absolutely no reason to protest.

You'll never see me out protesting. In the past I was inclined to defer to law enforcement. Now my natural distrust of all things government has bled over to police culture and behavior.

I only read the Trib article on this, so I am not well enough informed. If he pointed a gun at a cop, well then death becomes you. I just saw that they found a gun at the scene......

While I find it appallingly ignorant for one to place their unquestioning faith into everything law enforcement (not just local) says about situations such as these, a hasty Pavlovian protest in response to citizens being shot by a police officer without a shred of interest in even beginning to try to figure out what the reality of the situation was is, to me, just as appalling insofar as it all but certainly dilutes the interest of outside parties thus damaging the genuine efforts of those who really are struggling against the very real problems of, for example, overt racism and itchy trigger fingers on quite a number of police officers.

By kids I mean teens-young adults. When I see them in groups I tend to get away as far as possible. Far as I'm concerned, they are all banging. I know I sound like an old man, but it's ridiculous in these streets. There's a gas station at Homan and Harrison, literally 2 blocks from the police station, and someone is always getting shot over there. You all remember the chick that shot the other chick over what she said on Facebook? I was at that gas station the day before.
