Quality Cubs retort to Reds taunt during game last night.

Submitted for one's reading pleasure ...

The last time the Cubs were:
5-1;
lost game #4 by a score of 3-2; and,
had their home opener against the Reds (which they won 7-3, not 5-3, sorry) ...

... was 1908.

Looking forward to Lackey VS Simon tomorrow night. Simon only gave up 1 run VS the Pirates in his last game, which is pretty impressive. But he only went 5 innings in a no decision and his ERA last season was 5.05, so I don't see it being likely he will hold down the Cubs lineup. He throws pretty hard (92 average fastball) but not overpowering. Lackey will be looking to rebound from an inauspicious debut with the Cubs, albeit a win VS the Diamondbacks, when the Cubs took a 14-8 decision. in that game Lackey was actually very good in his final 3 innings, after giving up all of his 6 earned runs in the initial 3 innings. I believe he will be much more effective Wednesday night and settle some of the reactionary nonsense that came about during his last start. He's a solid starter with a proven history that includes World Series clinching wins with the Angels and Red Sox. In 2015 he had one of his best seasons all things considered and was 9th in Cy Young voting. He has maintained velocity and shown no signs of regression, other than a bad outing, which is going to happen to most starters a few times each season. Tomorrow night I believe he will get things on track and get the Cubs another win.

Maybe Montero should have waited for a walk. I mean, we could have forced more pitches out of that at bat.

Simon is at 40 pitches already. Great 2 strike hit by Montero and good job by Soler to plate another.

Looked pretty good against a good Pirates team, going 5 innings and just giving up 1 run. That is why he entered this game with a 1.80 ERA. But I agree that was deceptive and he's really not very good.. Gotta love a 5 run first inning to knock him out!

the only movement on his ball is after it made contact with the bat

That is a cute line, but not at all true. He had good downward movement on his sinker, but the Cub batters took a lot of those pitches rather than swinging over them and when he got behind in the count he had to throw a 4 seam fastball, that indeed did not have any movement.

I have to assume Lackey had the fact the wind is blowing from right to left field and will knock down fly balls hit to right in mind, when he served up that pitch to Bruce. With no wind (much less win blowing out) that ball is several rows up in the right/center bleachers.

Unproductive outs by Lackey (easy to excuse the pitcher) and Fowler, with the bases loaded and less than 2 outs. Luckily, Heyward picked them up. But situational hitting was a weakness at times last season and needs to be greatly improved this season.

Has to be a bit intimidating pitching to a team this deep. The pitcher's spot is pretty much the only soft spot.

Funny 1st inning...4 hits, 3 walks, a HBP, a sac fly, 5 runs...and 2 Heyward strikeouts.
