Just hope he doesn't fall apart like the last perfect pitching specimen, Prior.

Dude's added 6mph to his slider, and 1.6mph to his heater. 4 to his curve.

At least the Sox Subdivision can admit that Konerko was on the roids.

Always a gym rat

"In his first big league spring training, in 2009, Arrieta kept a personal blog," the Post's Adam Kilgore wrote. "He derided the Orioles’ spring training facilities, mocked the pitching mechanics of teammate Brad Bergesen and questioned the physical condition of established Orioles. One veteran noticed the blog, printed out copies and placed them on the chairs of every veteran in the clubhouse."

Always had the stuff and the strength

"He's a beast," said Matusz, a former starter who came up through the Orioles' organization with Arrieta. "Just a bulldog."

"I feel like he should have 10 [no-hitters] by now," said starter Chris Tillman, who spent parts of three minor league seasons with Arrieta at Triple-A Norfolk. "That's how good his stuff is. Go back and look at all the games here. As a young guy, he'd have a no-hitter through five and lose it. But his stuff was just as good."

Tillman said Arrieta's stuff has always been that good.

"Even when we were coming up in the minor leagues," Tillman said, "Jake had the best stuff I'd ever seen. The best makeup, the best physically, the best mentally, the best pitches, just the whole package."

So he may do it. But he was always an athletic freak, a gym rat and had crazy stuff. None of that is new.

The ability to control his pitches is new. Maybe he has a control PED

Went to a Big 12 school. Lots of roids running around there.

Okay, so limp wristed Sox fans can't argue whether or not Arrieta is great. He is. So they try to discredit his superior ability and performances by making baseless accusations of PED use. He got better with the Cubs right away, because Bosio changed his delivery. He always had great stuff.

I think all Sox fans on this board who have fond memories of Paul Konerko will readily admit his PED usage. This need for Arrieta to be absolutely perfect in every way right down to the way he brushes his teeth is a phenomena of Cubs fandom.

Frank just has the same chance of using as Greg Maddux.

But Maddux may have used. Who knows? No one is above suspicion

Maddux is in the Clemens/Bonds/McGwire 100% tier. People just dont understand how steroids enhance an athletes performance so they say "HE DIDN'T THROW HARD ENOUGH TO BE ON ROIDS" and assume that's that. Also, he played for the Cubs and no white player who's ever played for the Cubs is allowed to be accused of using steroids. Sosa is fine, as are any untermensch.

While Frank wouldn't surprise me, he was making a big stink about steroids back when nobody had any idea it was going on. It's different than modern players flaunting their yoga routines with a wink and a nod; if Thomas really was benefiting from roids why would he try to make an issue out of it when it wasn't an issue? OR IS THAT WHAT HE WANTS ME TO THINK? Odds on Hurt being dirty are right at 50% for me.

Sorry, its just a terrible analogy. You've been making bad posts lately. Just a slump though. You're an all time great.

I dont think anyone credits the workout or his body. It's clearly his ability to control pitches.

because he now doesn't have to throw as hard as he can to break 90, his control is vastly improved.

I wont dismiss that. Ill admit, I dont really know how it helps a pitcher. There are tons of conflicting theories.

Some people claim a guy who consistently gets injured is on the juice. Others say guys who are abnormally healthy must be juicing.

I just assume they are all cheating (except Adam LaRoche)

Yeah you gotta believe 99.9% percent of professional athletes are at the very least right up against that line of what's considering legal when it comes to improving performance.

And I'm on record saying I loved the steroid era. Bring them and 2nd sackers hitting 40 bombs a year back.

It's insane how many Cub fans in this thread are acting like this is insane speculation.

Seriously, what are his historical comps? Who went from having 6+ and 7+ ERAs and in less than a year turning into one of the best pitchers in baseball and then having arguably the best 25 game stretch in the history of MLB shortly after that.

I don't give a shit one way or the other. I still consider Bonfs the greatest baseball player ever. But let's not pretend this is crazy speculation.

That Shawn Green thing was crazy as was the career resurgence of a Benito Santiago. And Brady Anderson is the poster boy for all this right? At least Canseco and McGwire didn't come out of nowhere with their power.
