Jake's next start is Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers. With an off day on Monday, he will have 5 days rest so the 119 pitches he threw last night should not be a problem. Any chance he gets back to back no hitters?

I hope not, Maddon foolishly let him get overworked to win the CY and he ran out of steam against NY..keep your on the prize( world series) not meaningless wins in April.

I don't think focusing on a no hitter is the way to go. I want him to be strong at the end of the season. This is something you worry about when you are rebuilding.

167 pitches and two innings of relief the next game.

He started running out of steam in the Pirates game actually. As well as he pitched he got hit pretty hard in the middle innings. Then against the Cardinals and NY he was pedestrian.

I haven't watched a single play of Chicago NL baseball this season. I will be watching his next start though.

I agree that individual accomplishments pale in comparison to team goals. But Arrieta has the ability to pitch efficiently enough to throw a No-Hitter without getting into a high pitch count. With Milwaukee having a weaker offensive club than the Reds, it strikes me as possible, if not very likely.

To clarify, you think it is somewhere between possible and very likely that Arrieta will pitch a no hitter this Wednesday? If I were you, I would bet that because you'll get some really good odds against that happening.

I'll put up $500 to your $100 Steve. Arrieta will not throw a no hitter his next start.

5:1 odds against a no-hitter? Who could pass it up!?

Steve won't bet. He could have 10,000:1 and he wouldn't be man enough to bet something he thinks us "very likely"

I doubt he will get another no-hitter. In fact, I'd be surprised if he throws more than 80 pitches against the Brewers - his next three starts after that are against the Pirates, Nationals, and Pirates. Then another breather against the Brewers and then the Giants or the Cardinals.

What is the over/under on Arrieta consecutive seasons with no hitters? I'm putting the line at 2.5 and taking the under.

Johnny Vander Meer would say it's not likely, if he were able to comment.

I will be happy with a quality start in his next outing. My hope is Maddon and Bos try their best to limit him as much as possible. He was gassed in the post season last year. I'd rather them try to avoid that this season.

This morning Mully and Hanley were talking about how the Cubs developed a specific protocol for this year for deciding whether to take Arrieta out of late inning no-hitter situations based on pitch counts and the game situation. As if they are expecting it to happen fairly often.

Yup.

The funny thing is that Steve is going to do this.
Throws no hitter: Look at my amazing prediction.
Does not throw no hitter: Well, no hitters are rare, and he still came close because he gave up X hits.

That's interesting, because in the post game after the no-hitter Maddon specifically said that when a guy is going for a no-hitter all that pitch count stuff goes out the window. He basically said that as a manager he could never really take a guy out of a no-hitter unless the circumstances were extreme.

Throwing back to back No-Hitters has been accomplished just once in the history of Major League Baseball. To bet on it happening doesn't take guts, it just requires an extreme lack of sense. The mathematical probability is about the same as winning the Power Ball game in the lottery. However, if anyone has the kind of stuff to do it it's Jake Arrieta and he will be facing a team that is not exactly stacked with great hitters these days.

So you don't think it will happen then?

The mathematical probability is slim. But I can see Jake carrying a no hitter into the 5th-7th inning, as he did several times in 2014 before surrendering a base hit. But again, with his stuff, facing a less than stellar offensive club, it's not impossible.

Which is it, Steve? Does it "strike you as possible, if not very likely", or is the chance it happens back to back "very slim"? Pick a lane.
