He's the baseball coach at Genoa Kingston HS and he let his pitcher throw 167 pitches yesterday. This is after he threw a complete game on Saturday and pitched 2 innings on Monday.

The Kid is committed to Illinois St and has a chance to be pretty good if this dumbass hasn't already ruined him. If I were a coach at ISU I'd be driving up there to kick the shit out this asshole.

I have trouble getting worked up over this sort of thing. The chance that his best moments of glory are right now is pretty good. Let him lay it on the line. His arm isn't going to fall off. He's not going to be a big league pitcher. I doubt this is going to kill his college career either.

I could possibly see this if it was the state playoffs. Probably not still but would understand. There is no reason to over work a kid in April let alone throw 167 pitches in an outing.

A couple years ago I saw a college guy throw 183 pitches in a game. He was drafted and made 1 or 2 appearances in pro ball before he got hurt had surgery and was released. He tried to make a comeback last year in the Frontier league but he had nothing and was released again. I haven't heard anything about him so his career is most likely over. I seriously doubt he would say that game was worth it.

Kind of reminds me of a kid here in the city whose coach sent him out on a cold late March day 2-3 years ago to throw 120+ pitches in a meaningless game (except for the largely irrelevant fact that it was vs. a big time Catholic league team). He basically shut them down...but didn't pitch again for the team that as usual, came up short in the playoffs. Guess what. Arm issues. Goofy coach.

I was told that his dad (who wasn't at the game) was big on him never pitching for that coach again. Fortunately for the kid, his scholarship was there as was his spot in a MLB organization. I hope he's still comfortable.

My nephew got hurt pitching in a cold game. Pitching in the north sucks and these dumbass coaches have to start protecting their players. My guy KLaw is all over this story. Hopefully this starts some serious action to get pitch and innings limits for HS players. There is no reason to subject players to this kind of abuse.

Blaming the coaches only in this seems to be a bit short sighted.

Is pitching 100 pitches in the north harder on your arm than pitching 100 in the south?

What should the pitch count/inning limit be? How is it monitored? Is a coach that has a pitcher throw 150 pitches in a game going to abide by a pitch count?

Seems like something that sounds good, but harder to make happen.

Reminds me of the city playoffs in 1999. We had our ace (Justin Turner) pitching on 2 days rest. He threw what had to be close to 200 pitches in the city championship game. At the end he was throwing with all heart. We won so I guess it was worth it.

Heard a guy this mornin on hit n run ( Jeff something) from Yahoo.. Was talking about a youth tourney where each team picks one guy to pitch All their games n this kid ( who threw mid 90's) three 775 pitches in 9 days..he was drafted and has had arm problems since.. Can't bust 90 on the gun.

For the record, I threw no pitches in HS and I didn't make the major leagues, so maybe the coach knows what he is doing.

I used to throw at least 150 every four days when I was 16-19 even in the winter to stay in game shape. Mostly fastballs not a lot of breaking stuff. Me and a couple buddies threw inside a huge heated machine shed all seasons rain or shine. Young arms not stressing during game situations are not going to get injured. Game stress is different. Not a smart thing at all.

Until we see pitch limits on travel ball and the end to year round pitching, this won't do a ton to stop the injuries.

Kids could also put the baseball down for a few months in the fall and winter and pick up a basketball or a football. That would probably help with arm injuries.

Limiting pitches and innings in the spring when it's cold and when pitchers body's aren't ready for that kind of work load is a very important first step.
