WEATHER HAZARDS EXPECTED:

SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS...THE STRONGEST MAY PRODUCE:
HALF DOLLAR SIZE HAIL.
LOCALLY DAMAGING WIND GUSTS OVER 60 MPH.
HEAVY DOWNPOURS.
AND FREQUENT CLOUD TO GROUND LIGHTNING.

AREAS AFFECTED AND TIMING:

THE MOST LIKELY TIMING OF THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE REGION ALONG
WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR ISOLATED SEVERE WEATHER IS BETWEEN 4 AND
9 PM
THIS EVENING.

DISCUSSION:

SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE FORECAST TO TRACK EAST ACROSS
NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND NORTHWESTERN INDIANA THROUGH EARLY THIS
EVENING. CONDITIONS WILL BE FAVORABLE FOR SOME STORMS TO BECOME
SEVERE WITH LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS BEING THE MAIN
THREATS.

Damn it, first softball game of the year at 6:30 tonight. Be nice to narrow it down from "between 4-9."

Be careful out there, boys and girls. There were many flooded roads on my way to pick up the kids from school.

Wild Irish Rose, if you please. Good thing I did. They kept the kids in the gym and people had to come get them. Some people didn't get out til 3:30ish.

Looks like some severe weather tomorrow, and tomorrow night. The last time the phrase "potential tornado outbreak" was used in this area, there was a huge tornado that crossed I-90 up in Darko's neck of the woods.

The severe weather threat has actually increased today. It is almost a certainty that there will be large hail, damaging winds, and/or a tornado in or within about 50 miles of the Chicago metro area. All of the ingredients and in place and the atmosphere is very unstable. After this morning batch of rain moves out, the atmosphere will further be unsettled as humid air moves in and daytime heating makes things prime for supercell formation. From what the weather service says, 4pm until about 11pm are the danger times, with 6pm til about 9pm being zero hour. Make sure you keep an eye to the sky, have a way to get weather info (phone, radio, etc), and be prepared to take shelter when warnings are issued.

I parked under a tree in my office parking lot. So either:

a) tree helps reduce hail damage
b) tree breaks and amplifies hail damage

is it just me or has anyone else noticed that nowadays whenever you have a decent/+ thunder/storm that local news covers it like we're facing another noah's ark scenario?

right now it's casually raining and the channel 2 news has a perma-radar in the lower left corner showing a decent storm go through illinois like it was some kind of severe thunderstorm where you gotta warn people in its path. i swear to god this shit is beyond-oversensationalized and downright looney!

when the bears and ravens had that game at soldier field delayed cuz of lightning a dissheveled plainclothes steve baskerville was reading from a clipboard while the screens behind him were massively zoomed in on the strongest part of the storm so the whole video-wall behind him was all threatening.... and then they kept on doing a cycle where they'd show stock/footage of some tornadoes that ravaged southern illinois like THIS COULD BE COMING FOR YOU! THEY'RE RUNNING FOR SHELTER IN SOLDIER FIELD! AHHHHH IT'S ALL OVER!!!! JESUS IS RETURNING TO JUDGE US ALL BEFORE THE RAPTURE!!!!!

...and then of course within about 30-45mins the bears and ravens got back out on the field and played football like we didnt just experience a category 8 water-based-event!

YES! The trend I've noticed is they break in with "Approximately 800,000 people could be affected by this upcoming storm," so they just add up the population of the area the storm is going to encompass. Annoying!

if you wanna look at things that way then you ought to be cautious/smart when you post here. it's theoretically possible that anyone on the internet (not in china or north korea anyways) could read this board, therefore any and all dumbass posts could piss off "approximately 1-2 billion people" let alone our usual "high watermarks" of goff/drinky/bernstein/laurence/mitch/etc #TreadCarefully
