Prior to the season I would have reflexively said no way. But if you look at how many NL teams are currently implementing "The Plan" and losing on purpose, it would be kind of sad if they don't win 100. Still, I'd bet against it.

You look at the game results from the Cubs and immediately think "well they haven't played anyone yet...when the difficult part of their schedule kicks in they'll have problems." And then you start scrolling through their schedule to find the difficult part, and you keep scrolling, and scrolling... and you realize that this is it. The Cubs schedule doesn't get much harder from here, its just a nonstop conveyor belt of shitty tanking rosters interspersed with the occasional team even making an effort.

The Cubs and Nationals have a legitimate shot of breaking the single season win mark.

What was it...a month ago, that you guys were predicting 92 if they're lucky and no chance of repeating 97?

I underestimated the tanking going on in the NL, which is shocking because when I was spouting off about the NL a couple months ago I was just trolling. But here we are and the NL is even worse than anyone could have predicted.

That's what I just said. Still, I doubt they'll win 97 again. But the tanking in the NL is embarrassing.

I said at the end of last season that they would win more games this season and top 100 in 2016, so I am not surprised. I knew they would sign a couple players and have an improved team, in addition to their younger players having the benefit of the experience they got in 2015.

A lot depends on the division. If the Cubs open up a lead of 20+ games by July, which is not out of the realm of possibilities, I think they will ease off the gas down the home stretch and then try to pick it up big time in the last few weeks of the season. Given that, there is a chance they aren't going to get above 100 wins. If the rest of the division remains competitive, look for them to break 105.

it seems fairly apparent this team is making the playoffs.... they are too good to not make the playoffs. so the next 3-4 months are pretty pointless. if the cub can get through the season without losing one of their top 3 pitchers is about the only thing i would be concerned about.

New Liguetos playbook on which wins matter is very complicated.
Image

Can someone list which teams W's against don't count?
Is this list just for the Cubs or all other teams?

Does it matter when you played a team from this magical list or does it last all year?

Are the Giants considered to be a tanking team because they've struggled so far?
How about one of the Word Series favorites....the American League Astros?
Yankees?

I picture this playbook selling at auction in exchange for a pack of smokes, a sixer of Natty Light and a "Wrigley Field America's biggest gay bar" tank top.
No not that America.

It's not that the Cubs are too good to not make the playoffs, it's that they are one of about 5 teams in the NL that want to make the playoffs. Just by virtue of trying the Cubs are likely getting in, especially in the Central where STL is anticipating a down year, CIN and MIL are trying to lose and only PIT sees themselves as a real contender. It's a fucking joke, if an NL team wants in the playoffs they just have to ask politely for an invitation.

I'm sure a guy who is as baseball savvy as yourself is well aware of which teams are in the early stages of "The Plan".

I highly doubt the Cardinals are anticipating a down year. While everyone is making a big deal of the Cubs run differential, take a look at who has the second biggest run differential in the league. Hint, its the Cardinals.

The 538 guy has them for 102 wins if that means anything.

Oddsmaker Adjusts Cubs’ Over/Under Wins Total To A Staggering 116.5
April 25, 2016 2:57 PM

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, center, high-fives second baseman Ben Zobrist, left, and right fielder Jason Heyward after hitting a three-run homer.

(CBS) The Cubs are off to a sizzling 14-5 start, their best since 1969.

One oddsmaker has reacted accordingly.

William Hill has adjusted its Cubs over/under win total to a staggering 116.5.

.@Cubs hype reached an all time high here in Vegas; new prop via @WilliamHillUS 2016 Win Total Over 116.5 : +1500 Under 116.5 : -4000
— Todd Fuhrman (@ToddFuhrman) April 25, 2016

There’s significance to the 116.5 line. The MLB record for wins in a season is 116, shared by the 1906 Cubs and the 2001 Seattle Mariners. Those Cubs went 116-36, while those Mariners went 116-46.

Not sure if the Score is being clickbait-ish with that terrible headline, or if it's simply because they do not have any editorial standards.
