The Cubs are off to one of their best starts in their team history. But could it be even better? The guys I WANTED the Cubs to sign, included Lackey (got him and he's 3-1) Jordan Zimmermann who is 4-0 (0.35 ERA) and opened the season throwing 24 2/3 scoreless innings and Denard Span, who is hitting .257 with 1 HR 11RBI and 3 SB with a .349 OBP. Almost identical to Heyward's .260 0 HR 12 RBI 4 SB and .365 OBP. Take away Zobrist (who I would not have signed (I would have Baez at 2B) and heyward and add Zimmermann and Span and I like this team even better, because in my opinion Pitching still is the #1 reason a team wins Championships more often that a great hitting attack. I like the improvements Theo made to the team, But I think Zobrist was an expensive older player who was not really needed and Heyward was ridiculously expensive and doesn't hit enough to justify the price tag. Span is comparable at a fraction of the price and Zimmermann and Span together would have cost less than Heyward alone. It's a great team, but not sure it could not have been even better.

Can't trust these numbers as accurate.

As you know Baseball is a slow walk in a field not a horse race. Zobrist and Heyward will get better and your guy will fall back in to place but I would not have minded Zimmerman.

Don't get me wrong, I like Zobrist and believe he will improve. I just thought the Cubs system had enough middle infielders. I like Heyward's defense, but I doubt based on his career numbers that he improves all that much. I think we will see Span with very comparable numbers at the end of the season at a fraction of the price. I would really liked to have seen a playoff rotation of Arrieta, Zimmerman, Lester and Lackey. I'll take another look at all their numbers at the conclusion of the season and see where the slow walk took them all.

It strikes me as not very likely that Zimmerman is not as likely to finish this season with an undefeated record.

This time last year Alfredo Simon and Shane Greene were almost 1-2 in Cy Young. See how that worked out in the end? The AL is a brutal league.

Justin Upton had a worse OPS than Austin Jackson and BABIP above .400 last I checked. Not a good contract the Tigers handed out there.

Wanted Price? Yes...but not for 200 million, that's absurd and will bite em in the ass.

I agree not at 200 million. Especially for a guy with a poor record in the post-season. But Zimmerman's contract was much more reasonable. The 3 guys I targeted....Zimmerman, Lackey and Span, all were reasonable if not bargains. Guys like Price and even Heyward and Zobrist who they signed..... I would not have signed because their salaries were too inflated. Span would have given them comparable production as Heyward and saved a ton of money.

There ought to be an investigation into Zimms agent, he could have gotten 140-150 mill ... I bet after he signed with Detroit there were a half dozen teams thinking wow..I'd have given him 105.

Someone posted here that Theo was not interested in Zimmerman. Why? I have no idea. You knew Greinke and Price were going to get huge deals. I would have bypassed those two and made Zimmerman my bigger priority.

I wasnt saying anything about Price. Sure many wanted him.

But Zimmerman was mentioned by many here as the guy to target.

I, for one, was never on the David Price bandwagon.

Pitching is easy to find these days. Hitting is the underappreciated commodity.

I'm actually kind of moved by your faith in me.
