This is the "dress theme" of the next road trip. Not 100%

“The thing about Joe, after playing against him for so long, how in the hell does he get every one of his players to be so prepared and ready for their role?” Lester said. “They always come up in big situations and succeed. Now that I have been around him for a year and whatever, I understand why. You have Javy Baez and Szczur and a few other guys on the bench. They are always prepared. They are always ready. Szczur comes up to plate in a big moment and changes the whole ballgame.

“Joe does such a good job with our guys. There is no lack of communication. Nobody on that bench is surprised when their name gets called. Joe puts us in the best situation to succeed, night in and night out.”

“Joe is the best,” Szczur said, savoring his big moment after getting a Gatorade shower from teammates. “I appreciate him giving me a chance to succeed. I take pride in what I do off of the bench. I think all of our bench players take pride in it. I believe that is why we are doing so well.”

“There is a reason he has won the manager of the year award in both leagues,” Ross said. “He is just a great manager. He has a plan for things, and although they sometimes appear to be off of the wall, you learn to trust those things.”

He is so good that he is 5 games under .500 on his postseason career.

Remember last year when the Cubs had their first shot at WS berth in over 10 years, and Maddon bundled himself up like he was going on a polar expedition, and the entire Cubs team quit before the first pitch of the NLCS was thrown?

Never seen a team decide they'd rather be at home in an LCS.

Envious sock fan

Robin's regular season is only 45 games under 500

and remind us FRANKIE what is Robin's post season record?

I'll sit down and wait for your answer.

I remember a Cubs team most picked to be somewhere around .500, winning 97 regular season games, then beating the Pirates and Cardinals in the post season, before finally losing out to the Mets. All while the White Sux sat home after yet another losing season. Then the Cubs further improved their team and were named the favorites to win the 2016 World Series and have gotten off to a great start in pursuing that title. That's what I recall....

I dont even criticize Robin because on the hierarchy chart in the Sox organization he is between Lawrie and Latos. Yes, that is correct, will not be his fault if they lose and wont be his if they win. He is along for the ride this year. All per my Sox people. Its the way Joe Orr wants it.

97-65 is quite a bit over the .500 mark they were mostly pegged to be at. But it wasn't just Joe, as much as the rookies of 2015 (Bryant, Russell, Soler and Schwarber) that produced the terrific results that exceeded expectations. Maddon certainly helped to get the best out of them on a regular basis though.

Not the way I want it, the way it is. Ventura makes exactly as much difference as Joe Maddon, funny suits and baby animals aside.

Disagree. One of the reasons Maddon was the Cubs choice, was his ability to work well with YOUNG developing players, as he did with the Rays. I do not believe Ventura would get the same results Maddon has. The funny suits, animals and magicians are just goofy stuff meant to break the monotony of the season and eliminate some stress/ tension. Ventura has a mostly veteran group, so the ability to develop young players is not a crucial element. Coop handles the pitching, so comparing the two isn't realistic even. Ventura really just handles the position players.

The numbers certainly point to it. A team predicted to be .500 goes 97-65.....some of the credit certainly goes to performances by the rookies that may have achieved above and beyond what was anticipated. But some credit should go to the manager, who got the best from them, as he also did in Tampa Bay. That's why he was Manager of the year and regarded by many as a top manager, while Robin has been considered below average until this season. The contributions of a manager are something that is impossible to quantify with any concrete proof, but if your position is that the manager makes no real difference, I don't think you are being honest, but rather choosing to be contrary for purposes of being argumentative only.

Are you saying last year's Cubs were a .500 team that was made into a 97 game winner by Maddon? Really? How do you know he got the best of anybody? Maybe Tampa was a multiple World Series champion brought down by the ridiculous Maddon. Way too much is made of guys that sit on their ass in the dugout.

That Cubs team lost everything it had going for it when Merlot Joe came out to a 45 degree October night in Queens dressed like it was February in Edmonton. When it was obvious from the get go that Maddon would rather be home in Florida the players took his cue.

I don't believe that either, but if we're going to impart these mystical powers to guys who are sitting on their asses while other people play baseball that sounds possible.

I honestly have no idea if Renteria is good or bad. The team has played better defense and smarter baseball since he arrived. However, the turned over 3B from an error machine (my guy Gillaspie), 2B from a fringe rookie and catcher from a guy who couldn't catch the balls between his legs. These are the much more likely reasons for the improved D and smarter baseball.

correct and don't forget the pitching both starting and relief ... which has been GREAT...and what I think is the real key to the great start.
