Not gonna win a Danks start. Any series without Sale and with Danks will be tough but they should win the first and third game.

If Danks blows this start, it is time to try Erik Johnson. Put Danks in relief or something. Petricka looks awful.

I agree you can't go much longer with Danks, but he doesn't have much value in the pen. Petricka is just having trouble locating right now. His stuff is still nasty. You can't just junk a guy every time he hits a rough patch.

Obviously Danks should be DL'd with some phony ailment, sent to AAA to "rehab" and somehow hope he can make some improvements. maybe one of their other bum starters can show something in the interim. couldn't be any worse.

Hope Petricka bounces back. Duke works out fine in the bullpen, and he had a Danks career path.

The Sox really dont have a 5th starter problem, they have more like a 3rd starter problem working its way down the rotation and highlighting itself in the form of John Danks. Part of it is the Sox have to start thinking playoffs, and a playoff rotation of Sale, Quintana, Rodon & Latos lacks a little, but a bigger part is getting the right guys in their right roles. Rodon has all that potential but only seems to realize it about half the time he goes out there, which makes him a lot more like a #4 starter. Latos is a perfect #5 for a team built on pitching and defense (like the Sox are).

The nice thing about being a Sox fan is Kenny Williams has absolutely no issue including Tim Anderson in a trade for Sonny Gray (if Oakland would start losing that would be nice), or whatever other front line starter will become available in the next month.

This problem can go unsolved for a while longer without killing the team, but it would be nice to get Danks the fuck out of there and see if Johnson/Gonzalez/Turner turns out to be a mega sleeper.

I agree, but Bucholz has an ERA above 6. Maybe the Sox hit some homers and eek one out in a slugfest.

DFA Danks.

Cant DFA him in May, it looks really bad. They can DL him with "soreness" like Hatchetman said, and it accomplishes the same thing while saving face for all involved.

You know what looks bad? Danks's numbers, and the fact that the Sox as a team are 1-12 in games he starts since last August. He got his money, get him off the 40 man now.

America is likely correct that they're not going to treat him that way, but the Sox certainly don't owe him a damn thing.

Well they owe him $14.5m, which is the only reason that dickbag has been starting games for as long as he has.

I think that's true to a degree of course, but really, I think it has more to do with them not having anyone better.

They don't have anyone obviously better. They have people who may be better.

Need to see what sticks, because this Danks thing hasn't worked in years. He's not even eating up innings.

That's easy for the guy watching Comcast to say, but there is probably something to the guys making 6 and 7 figures to evaluate talent knowing better most of the time.

siriusly? this organization has proven over the past decade how poor it is at judging major league talent.

That is true, but I cannot fathom that Eric Johnson or Miguel Gonzalez could do any worse than 2-10 over ~15 starts. That would be 100% more wins than Danks.

The Sox are pretty good at evaluating pitchers, which means Erik Johnson probably is not going to be the answer. They do not seem to like him at all.

Poor compared to Epstein and Beane. Not poor compared to you and America.

I think you're making it sound easier than it is. There are a lot of bad pitchers in rotations across baseball.

looks bad? His 0-4 record and ERA look really bad. It's called cutting your losses at this point. To continue to trot a guy out to the mound who is handicapping the team is ridiculous. Getting rid of players like LaRoche (got lucky shedding the contract too) and Danks and putting players in their place that are more capable of helping the team is the right thing to do. Blow in a call to Buehrle and see if he's missing the game.

I normally would say that you have to wait for his streak of about 10 good games that seems to happen every year. However, I have read that he has lost something off the speed of his pitches compared to the rest of his post surgery seasons. I think he is done.

Danks is done. Everyone knows it, including Danks. I don’t think this has anything to do with them not having someone at least comparable…it’s his contract. The fact that Danks starting translates to an automatic loss makes their record to date that much more impressive.
The money sucks but there has to be a point where they realize he will demoralize the team. Hoping this Boston series is that last one. It cannot continue.
