I honestly have no idea if Renteria is good or bad. The team has played better defense and smarter baseball since he arrived. However, the turned over 3B from an error machine (my guy Gillaspie), 2B from a fringe rookie and catcher from a guy who couldn't catch the balls between his legs. These are the much more likely reasons for the improved D and smarter baseball.

correct and don't forget the pitching both starting and relief ... which has been GREAT...and what I think is the real key to the great start.

wasn't the Cub defense pretty good under Renteria

I've been thinking the same thing, especially since I heard it'll cost $100 each time a player is out in public not dressed the Kooky Joe Way. When he loses this team next season, the fall (& typical Cubbie fan finger pointing) will be hilarious.

Is this for real?

Like, when these guys go to Starbucks in the morning they have to be dressed "zany"?

I understand the Cubs are desperate for a winner but at what cost?

Last year at Wrigley a few different visiting teams made their rookies go to Starbucks in their full uniforms. Pretty funny.

The $100 fine goes to the clubhouse guys..... imagine that ..taking care of the guys who take care of you....

the idea was based on it being a 3 game trip and the theme is MINIMALIST since the players didn't pack a big bag .... the suits cost all of $100 at sites like shinesty

Joe Maddon's dress code consists of one simple rule: “If you think you look hot, you wear it.”

the sock fan envy never stops from from the unbiased.......

It looks and sounds like they're having fun.
I trust Maddon enough that if it's ever not fun it will stop.
Teams certainly take on the personality of their manager. I'll take Joe's personality any day for my favorite team.
Does Joe get wins by managing? I know there's no spastic to prove it, jorr. But I'm willing to buy into it and if the players are also willing to buy into it, there becomes a self fulfilling prophesy element.

Well, that's fine, but if that's the rationale, Ventura is excellent too since every new guy says it's the best clubhouse he's ever been in. Still, I don't think it makes much difference if any at all. Hit the damn ball!

Robin's personality is... weird.
And it sounds like the clubhouse was a mess last year and heading into this season.
Robin allowed some weird shit to happen last year. We know this.

It's called a track record. You look at Tampa, where Joe took a bunch of kids and turned the team into a contender, when nobody thought it was possible. Then he takes a Cubs team projected to be around .500 last year and goes 97-65. 32 games over! Manager of the year. Robin took a team last year that was projected to contend .....and was 10 games under .500 at 76-86. Yes, they are off to a nice start this year, but I expect a correction will take place. Ventura is not a top manager, Maddon is.

He "took" them? That's really a disservice to a bunch of good baseball players.

He learned at the foot of Mike Scioscia (who hasn't won dick since '02) & with his "personality" has gotten one pennant (& a beating) in the WS in '08. If the fans and players still want to talk prophesies fine. Just don't be surprised when you & your favorite business franchise extend the streak to 108-109-110-111 and remain a laughing stock.

Yes, he took them, as in he is the leader. He helped them to develop into good players. That was one of the chief reasons he was hired as the Manager, because he has a knack for developing good young players and helping them reach their full potential. Nice to see you referring to them as a bunch of good baseball players, unlike last year at this time when you were scoffing at guys like myself who were predicting their success and you were predicting that many were going to be busts. Quite a change in tune.

Most "smart" Cub fans around here (& all numbers guys) ridiculed the hell out of Ned Yost's role in doing the exact thing they're now prematurely lauding Maddon for now. Right up until the Royals did two things Maddon & his teams have never done, win two pennants & an actual World Series.

The true period for contending began this season and should extend several seasons into the future. Some overzealous Cubs fans got caught up in the excitement of last year's 97 win squad. But I said then, that it was a year early and true contention would begin in 2016. They will win a World series, maybe more than one, in the next several years. they have the players and the manager. Injuries always factor into these things, but with as deep a team as they have, they can overcome them to some extent, as they have with Schwarber this season.

OK. So to clarify... by Robin's weird shit I mean a pitcher speaking out calling management liars and a 14 year old farting around the clubhouse and player straying off the reservation. Maddons shenanigans are cheeky and fun.... Robin's shenanigans are cruel and tragic... evil shennigans!

Do you even follow the game? Baez went 2 for 2 after entering the game last night and is batting .333 on the season at this point. Soler has never hit in cold weather and Russell is a very good player who has just had some tough luck hitting. He hit 2 balls in the game VS Atlanta that would have been HR's on a normal night, that the wind knocked down. He's going to be fine.

There is no correlation between enjoyment and winning:
