(CBS) Cue the grumbling downstate goobers.

The University of Illinois has announced the beginning of the typically unwieldy process to select a new school mascot, finally trying to exorcise the ghost of the banned Chief Illiniwek. The sports teams will remain the Fighting Illini, but they will be cheered on by something else in a silly suit and a bulbous plastic head.

Committee meetings will produce nominations and an ultimate successor to the racist symbol of the Chief, and the townie loyalists are sure to hate whatever it is, removing their “Make America Great Again” hats long enough to stick some feathers in their hair in protest. It’s not from any real feelings for native Americans, just the desire to be allowed to offend an ethnic group because doing so used to be OK before smart people knew better.

They’ll hate whatever it is, and perhaps the rest of us will too, considering how this university gets so much wrong.

But Kirby the KornKob, Combie the Combine or Sid the Annual Federal Agricultural Subsidy is on his way.

I'm sure the irony is lost on bernstein, but the entire point of racism or sexism or any "ism" is to make oneself feel superior to those belonging to another group. This is exactly what bernstein likes to do with millions of people living in Illinois but outside the Chicago metropolitan area.

He has such an enlightened view of the world. I aspire to gain that North Shore perspective that I lack due to my upbringing in the Mecca.

Not sure about Costner but read the other day Ripken has just had his divorce finalized.

I think I've mentioned this before. When I was driving from Vegas to LA on my first honeymoon, we had the radio on and some shock jock on an LA station was running through that story. Costner himself actually called up in an unhinged state and started raking the guy on the air.

When former Oriole Cal Ripken Jr. and his wife, Kelly, divorced last week, the documents were placed under seal in Baltimore County Circuit Court.

That's not the case for most divorces.

Divorces, as with other civil court cases, are presumed to be open to the public. But under Maryland's Rules of Procedure, cases can be sealed from public view when the court finds a "special and compelling reason" to do so. Sealed cases do not show up in Maryland's online judicial case search.

The Maryland Rules of Procedure also say court orders to seal cases should be public, but that's not the case in the Ripkens' divorce. The Baltimore Sun has requested that the Baltimore County Circuit Court make the order available to the public.
