Poor Estrada didn't get any run support.

Seriously, though, this was a baseball game. I give Quintana credit for making pitches when he had to. The game really came down to a single at-bat against a .170 hitter and Estrada didn't make the pitch. That's baseball. Losers deserve to lose most of the time. That's why "run support" is a dumb concept.

Estrada was throwing meatballs, it was only a matter of time someone got him..he shouldn't have been in the game.

He was making the Sox hitters look silly with that change all night. This game, if you really watched it, makes my entire argument for the value of a starter's W/L record. The plate umpire was very generous toward the pitchers. That's why the score was low and the number of baserunners were limited. If you just looked at a stat sheet without understanding the context, the pitching looked better than it actually was. In a game like this, it's pretty likely that one starter will take the loss and the some reliever will get the win. But Quintana was able to stay in the game long enough- atypically by the way- for his teammates to hit Estrada. That's how you earn a win.

I only caught 2 innings, he threw a really nice curve just below the zone with a lot of movement and that was the only one he threw...he was throwing 88-89 meatballs up in the zone a lot..his pitch count was high and the Sox were facing him for the 3rd time around...bad managing by keeping him in and dumb pitch calling by not calling for that curve or keeping the ball down.

Quintana may actually be better than Sale. 1-2 in the Cy no doubt.

I still worry about him in a playoff series if the Sox get there. But yeah he's been fucking great this year.

I'm afraid this Sox success has disabled your ability to enjoy the Cub season so far. My condolences.

Well, he is pitching pretty well, but the guys he is facing aren't getting any run support.

Fail

How so? You've been in the Sox section as much as any Cub fan all season long.

Also, Quintana is our number 2, so if you want to compare his season to Lester's, go for it. At least keep your trolling logically consistent though. :thumleft:

So, now Arrieta is going to matchup against both Sale and Quintana. Rodon will get it going as well.

Compare him to Lester? You guys are already calling him a Cy Young candidate.

Mercy!

Sale/Quintana vs Arrieta/Lester is even right now. Lester always seems to pitch worse than he actually does.

Quintana is better than Lester at this point. Rodon had one bad start, but he might be the most talented of the bunch. And the starters only have to go six innings.

I'm talking 1-2 punch. Quintana has been slightly better than Lester and Arrieta has been slightly better than Sale. At this exact time, its even.

All 4 have been ridiculously good so far eventhough one of them is a pussy about throwing to first and eventually its going to fuck him and piss me off.

Lester is probably still better than Arrieta. I really wouldn't want Arrieta on the Sox with how poorly he pitched in Baltimore. Maybe Arrieta's stuff is good enough, but some guys aren't mentally tough enough to face AL lineups. He does well mowing down the Reds or whoever, I'll give them that.

I'd take Lester as the #3 for the Sox though, with the expectation that Rodon out plays him by the end of the year.

Other than that I want nothing to do with any of the Cubs baby league pitchers. They are all gas cans against the lineups the Sox have faced in these last 4 series.

You saw what happened to Quintana on the one bad pitch he made all night? It got creamed into the bullpen in RF. These last 4 team the Sox have played, TEX, TOR, BAL and BOS have lineups that almost 1-9 will make a pitcher pay. Go find the easy out in Boston or Baltimore's lineup, I dare you. And its not like these lineups are just deep, there are a few extremely tough outs. The Sox have played 2 Hall of Famers in the past 8 days. And the reigning AL MVP. And Manny fucking Machado who's about as good a player as there is playing the game today.

Point is, after Quintana got taken deep on literally the only mistake he made all night, he settled back in and didn't allow anything more. Just ignored it. Until that HR he was basically invincible, then his invincibility was shattered. He shrugged it off and pitched a few more shutout innings.

Arrieta really doesn't have to deal with lineups that punish him. He kind of goads shitty NL garbage players into contact (his K rate is pathetic this year) and the outs take care of themselves. If he hangs one here, or misses his spot there; so what? Its not like this guy who should be selling used cars is gonna know what to do with a hanger right over the plate in a major league stadium. David Ortiz, on the other hand? Say goodbye.

Lester has at least succeeded in the AL before and he knows how to do it. He can mentally stand up to the pressure even if it does look like he's lost some of his best stuff. I at least know he wont collapse (the way Arrieta did in the playoffs) at the first sign of trouble, Lester at least can battle against the best.

Its a bit over the top for sure, but with Lester's issues with throwing to first I would not want him on my team. I am not sure why the #1, 2, 7, 8, 9 hitters do not bunt against Lester about 90% of the time.
