By all accounts they have great chemistry, enjoy playing for Maddon and each other and I have yet to hear anyone bitch about any of it. Meanwhile, Sox players very nearly sat out a Spring training game, in protest of a 14 year old "leader" being told he couldn't hang around every day, which led to daddy taking his bat and going home. Then they hang the kid's uniform up like he was some star player who died in a car crash or something. What a bunch of pansy asses.

There is no correlation between enjoyment and winning:

Best thing that could have happened to the Sox...getting rid of the weirdo and his kid.

Absolutely. He was handicapping his team, as he was no longer a productive player, yet because of his salary, he would have continued to play in place of guys more capable. If they were smart, they would DFA Danks and give his starts to someone more capable as well.

Sometimes you chum a thread and nothing shows up and other times (like here) you might as well have posted a picture of Chris Kyle on an ISIS website.
Well done.

So to recap.
Managers mean nothing. Joe Maddon, Terry Bevington....all the same.
The Cubs lost to the Mets....(Bernstein scream talking voice) BECAUSE THE MANAGER WAS DRESSED TOO WARM.
Addison Russell is not a good player.
Players enjoying being at work and liking their boss is wrong.

He learned at the foot of Mike Scioscia (who hasn't won dick since '02) & with his "personality" has gotten one pennant (& a beating) in the WS in '08. If the fans and players still want to talk prophesies fine. Just don't be surprised when you & your favorite business franchise extend the streak to 108-109-110-111 and remain a laughing stock.

I feel like you're going a little strong against the guy here. He's been pretty successful. How many current managers have won a WS?

I have heard no prophecies but that's ridiculous and should be treated as such. Its not even worth mentioning, imo.

It's called a track record. You look at Tampa, where Joe took a bunch of kids and turned the team into a contender, when nobody thought it was possible. Then he takes a Cubs team projected to be around .500 last year and goes 97-65. 32 games over! Manager of the year. Robin took a team last year that was projected to contend .....and was 10 games under .500 at 76-86. Yes, they are off to a nice start this year, but I expect a correction will take place. Ventura is not a top manager, Maddon is.

He "took" them? That's really a disservice to a bunch of good baseball players.

Most "smart" Cub fans around here (& all numbers guys) ridiculed the hell out of Ned Yost's role in doing the exact thing they're now prematurely lauding Maddon for now. Right up until the Royals did two things Maddon & his teams have never done, win two pennants & an actual World Series.

What?

Yost was mocked because he had a reputation for losing his cool at the worst times. He got fired from a team 9 days before the playoffs. He also uses a very old school strategy that many of us think is not the best way to win. He proved many of us wrong and that's fine.

But Maddon and Yost are nothing a like. Huge Stretch.

Do you even follow the game? Baez went 2 for 2 after entering the game last night and is batting .333 on the season at this point. Soler has never hit in cold weather and Russell is a very good player who has just had some tough luck hitting. He hit 2 balls in the game VS Atlanta that would have been HR's on a normal night, that the wind knocked down. He's going to be fine.

Invalid. That will balance out by a couple wind blown HR in August. He is what his numbers say he is. Which is decent.

It's been 31 years of things that aren't even worth mentioning being heavily marketed by the north side NL business. 20-25 years of guys like Kaplan, Murphy, Wilbon, Rozner & Bernstein dominating the airwaves carefully/arrogantly explaining how the NL Business Franchise's newest move is the smartest, cleverest, long term path to ultimate success.

It's curses, then "shrines", then it's one of two of the last bastions of the old/great American way, and now shlocky, gimmicky moves are going to become a self full-filling prophesy. Fuck, when is enough enough? Three-four years ago I would have welcomed a Cubs WS title if for no one else than good Cub fans.

Not anymore.

Mike Murphy is about the worst example you could have picked.
Short of the Sun-Times staff and the Liguetos in this section there is nobody more invested in Ricketts, Theo and Maddon NOT winning a WS title.

The Cub must've done something unspeakable to Regular Reader long ago.

He just might be the most anti-Cub guy on the board. It sure seems like there's some deep seeded hatred for the Boys in Blue on his part. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Reader is actually the infamous Southside Bob who used to call the Score all time to complain about the Cub and column inches.

But its the Mike Murphy of the 1992 Score I'm referring to. He of the love for the 6'4" Brooks Kieschnick & "his big strong chest". But I could even overlook to a degree his other "issues" and take him for the goof his is without much more thought.

I can see how Murphy can be pained by fans like Bernstein taking his place on the Cubs bandwagon now (& that he and I share similar feelings  ), and I can almost  have sympathy.

I can guarantee that I'm not SouthSide Bob. But as I mentioned above, as recently as 3-4 years ago, those days were behind me. Years ago, my disgust for the Cubbies was tied just to ownership and play on the field. I openly cheered Cubbie losses. Had the Santo call of Murton dropping the fly ball as a voice mail greeting and all. 2005 ended most of that.

But the Ricketts revived that hate, Theo & his fanboy love fest unexpectedly re-strengthened it.

& Kirkwood, say it with a :)

It was Brant Brown who dropped that ball in left field to blow the lead up at County Stadium in Milwaukee. That was the year they traded for Karchner and Heredia. It was the year that I decided to stop watching Cub games for about 5 years.

I happened to be at that game sitting in the left field bleachers watching that ball curve in the air and get misplayed.

It also supports far left, gender identity politics but only as much as Joe will tolerate
