I caught a little bit of this yesterday night and I think it holds up incredibly well for a coming of age comedy. Eugene Levy is brilliant, as he most often is.

My friend used to tape SCTV when I was kid in grade school. SNL reigned supreme at the time in the talk of the school and deservedly so because those were the Murphy, Piscipo, etc. years. However, I'd love to watch those SCTV tapes.

I would hold the cast of SCTV up against any cast of any year of SNL. Brilliant comedic actors who are still plugging away at it today (RIP John Candy) and stealing scenes in smaller roles.

and Shannon Elizabeth was possibly the perfect female form

the worst actress in the history of acting but a person who I could stare at for an hour

While I won't make any argument against the SCTV cast, there was the difference in that SCTV was a pretaped show, so they had the safety net that SNL doesn't; still: Short, Candy, Levy, Moranis, O'Hara, Martin, Flaherty, Thomas...? All brilliant, and most found success afterward.

And AP was a great movie that the legacy will be forever ruined by the godawful sequels/spinoffs.

Yes, sir. Freshman year of college (2000), I joined her fan club through her website. I e-mailed her to ask if she would come visit my college. Didn't work.

I watched the first two recently as well and yea, they're great movies. The first half of the 2nd movie is nonstop laughs.

The sequel was worthwhile. It was good and, as you said, had a solid first half.

Andrea Martin as well...There is almost no one in that cast who hasn't been great in something beyond SCTV.

Maybe it is the Canada thing or maybe I am being naïve but none of these actors, as brilliant as they are, seemed to be plagued by the same demons as even the most mundane SNL cast members

I wrote about the National Lampoon documentary on HBO and how SNL raided their talent. I wonder why they didn't raid SCTV?

The most recent movie of the series, American Reunion, is terrible. The first three were, and still are hilarious.

By the time the original SNL cast left, SCTV was decidedly weirder than SNL was. By that time Lorne Michaels clearly wanted to go in a more middle of the road & controllable talent direction. I'd guess that he'd become so corporate that cheesy and vapid was what he was looking for.

Yeah, its aged well. Saw it a few months back for the first time in a while. I'm also a huge fan of Eugene Levy.

I still remember walking in the local mall as a pre-teen and seeing posters for American Pie hanging outside the CD store. Simpler times...

2nd American Pie is in the top 5 sequel discussion. Solid.
These have held up well over time. Still Hilarious.

Comedies....VERY few comedy sequels are worth watching. This was one of the few that worked.

I agree with this.

Being roughly the same age as the cast in this movie it also has been pretty interesting to watch them as a snippet in time as the cast has grown older.

I have liked all the movies but the first two are the best.
