The bullpen blew a few leads. It happens. 10 game homestand coming up. 6-4 at least, would love to see 7-3.

It would have been nice if Shuck had gone down and dominated. He's doing ok right now but I would have liked to see him demand a roster spot. Then they could have sent Sands down.

The bullpen was spectacular in April. Let's not write them off as average after a few bad games.

With Sale and Quintana going in the last series, it seemed reasonable the Sox could take 2 of 3. Instead they lose another series and have won just 1 series of the last 5. They have dropped 4 of their last 5 games. I said the decline was starting just as it did and told everyone that their vaunted starting pitching would come back to earth and be the mediocre staff it really is....and it has happened and will continue. The overworked bullpen is no longer the strength it was early on. Now it is a vulnerability. With the Astros, Royals and Indians coming to town, this home stand will quickly show if they are contenders or pretenders, with the Royals and Indians being the teams I think will ultimately battle it out for the division. The fact the rest of the division got off to such a lousy start to the season, is the only reason they are in a favorable position in the division.

Not that the bullpen will not be fine, but historically the first month or so of the season is usually dominated by pitching. Around mid-May is when the batter's start to get in a groove and everything starts to even out.

I am not writing them off as average. They very well maybe above average, but they are not, nor will they ever be a Royals like bullpen.

Sale and Quintana both still have ERAs under 2.00 and WHIPs under 1.00. Johnson and Gonzalez have been an improvement over Danks. Rodon has had a couple bad outings, but you find me a kid who has been in the league for a year, who doesn't get whacked around once in a while by a potent AL lineup. He will be fine. There isn't one person anywhere, not even Latos himself, who thought he was going to keep up his hot start. Captain Obvious strikes again.

These "baseball thoughts" of yours are as bad as any call you have made to the radio stations. Disregarding facts, and presenting obvious observations is the brand way.

Albers, Jones and Robertson all have ERAs of 2.60 or below. The bullpens was Royals like for all of April and most of May.

NOTHING. THAT'S WHAT

Since I said the Sox were going to begin their decline, they have lost series' to the Red Sox, Rangers and Yankees and split with the Orioles. The only team they have beaten was the lowly Twinkies. They have just 2 good pitchers and Quintana will regress from the performance level he has had to now and finish with an ERA around 3.30. Gonzalez has been bad in 2 of his 3 starts, Latos is in decline now (as predicted) and Rodon had been bad. The Sox will not win their division, nor get a wildcard. Frazier was a nice addition, but I won't be shocked if he drops off in the 2nd half of the season, much as he did in the 2nd half last season. It's a pretty good team, but not a great team by any means. At least many Sox fans seem to be recognizing the fact that their team is not really a contender and that their initial start was just fools gold.

3 first place teams, 2 of whom were on the road and NY which is traditionally a death trap for the Sox.

I think the Sox had a late lead in 5 of the six games on the road trip with the sixth one being a 2-1 game.

These series are harbingers of future success, contrary to your interpretation of them as foretelling doom.

I'm going to take a page out of Steve's thin book. I predict that the Cubs will regress, and not finish the season with a .700 winning percentage. Then when it happens I will pat myself on the back 15 times.

If you think the inability of their bullpen to hold leads is a positive, cling to it. If you think an ERA of 5.26 in their just completed 2-4 road trip is encouraging, celebrate it. I see a starting rotation that is shaky and a bullpen that is showing signs or being overworked in the first 6 weeks of the season. I see these trends continuing. But if you want to bet on Latos, Gonzalez and Rodon, feel free.

So, the guy who says that Sox fans shouldn't celebrate being in first place after 30 games because it's a long season, is now ignoring the first 30 games, and using a 6 game sample size to show that the bullpen sucks?

I consider the more recent trends indications that Latos indeed is reverting back to the form that resulted in him being a free agent long into the off-season after a mediocre 2015 season. I suspect Gonzalez is also showing why he was no longer wanted by Baltimore though he had a couple pretty fair seasons before a poor 2015. Rodon is not really a proven commodity. To say what he will be at this point would be conjecture. He's got great stuff, but doesn't locate as well as he needs to. The bullpen did perform well early, but as a result of overworking them, the relief corps is now performing poorly. Plus, they had to face some better hitting teams besides the Twinkies of late, so they got exposed a bit after some fools gold was extracted early in the season.
