It seems unfair that the extreme level of bat shit crazy that "America" and Francis have reached overshadows the rest of the weirdos.

Why is Ricketts a shitty dude? He's done more for the Cubs and the Wrigley neighborhood than perhaps any owner in Cubs history. He hired Theo, renovated Wrigley, and rebuilt the Cubs into the best team and organization in MLB.

And who does that help besides Ricketts and a bunch of suburban fans who like to sing "Go, Cubs, Go" after a win?

So do you think they should have just kept going with the oldpl? Fans want owners who improve their facilities, team, and organization. What Rickettz has done is unbelievable and rarely seen in the sports world today. The guy deserves a helluva lot of credit. He's the best owner in the City by a mile and it isn't close.

I've never heard a Sox fan defend Reinsdorf's sweetheart deal, but you can't find a Cub fan who doesn't think Ricketts should own Clark Street if he wants it.

You could if you looked further than your nose.

Again with another asinine dumbassed comment.

Just admit you cannot be remotely objective on any baseball issue because of your serious deep hatred for the Cubs.

Just admit your love for the Cubs is clouding your vision. You'd let Ricketts make people homeless if you could get to experience what Frank and I did in 2005. But you won't. Wait 'til next year.

They're trying to do what any rich guy does, bully their way to conditions that are favorable to them at the expense of others. I realize you're a Cub fan, but it's not really something to cheer for.

I don't like Rickets, most cub fans I know feel similarly.. I'm not sure where you come up with this horseshit, people bitching about the park should stfu or move..its like these asswipes that buy a cheap ass house in bensenville and cry about the airport noise.

Have you followed this thread? Obviously, most Cub fans that post in this forum don't feel that way. I think one should be able to separate being a fan of the Cubs and his viewpoint on allowing a rich guy to bully his neighbors. Aggravated Bob and I have ripped that fucked up stadium deal on the South side time and time again. It doesn't mean we're not Sox fans. And even if I thought knocking down Peeps' house to build White Sox Craft Brewing and Hotel would "help" the Sox win another World Series, believe me, I wouldn't be in favor of such.

And people aren't moving in and complaining about the park as it is. They've moved in and are complaining about what Ricketts is attempting to do with the park. That's not difficult to understand, is it?

Whatever, McCuddy's got screwed but so did the taxpayer, and he's still getting screwed. And it's a land grab on the North side too no matter how many times Ricketts and his spokesmen and apologists say he's "spending his own money". He's getting tax breaks the guy that owns Red Ivy isn't. Beth Murphy isn't being allowed to shut down Sheffield on game days or take half of Waveland for her bar.

Fuck the Cubs. The magic of Wrigleyville was always the symbiosis between the ballpark and the neighborhood. Businesses and residences wouldn't be worth shit without Wrigley Field, and the Cubs wouldn't draw 30,000 to 70-win day baseball in an Itasca office campus. Never should have messed with the formula. You got greedy, Martin.

And how did "the formula" work out for the Cubs? Sure, it was a cash cow for TribCo, (a company that ended up going bankrupt, anyway), but how many championships did that symbiosis bring?

It's not like the neighbors just started bitching when the Ricketts took over - they have been bitching for decades; it's just a different level of bitching for pretty much the same reasons. Didn't stop them from attempting to profit themselves, and don't think for a second that they wouldn't be bitching even louder if Ricketts had announced that he WAS moving the team when he took over.

Baseball operations were notoriously underfunded and understaffed under the Tribune, not for lack of revenue but because they didn't feel it was necessary. Long before Wrigley Field was transformed into Jumbotron Gardens Presented By Bud Light And Nuveen Investments, the dump-inhabiting Twins and A's were running crackerjack scouting/development departments with a small fraction of the Cubs' revenue. Drop the '03 Twins into Wrigley Field, all other things being equal, and they have just as good a shot at winning the pennant as the Cubs did. Even still, the shitty jury-rigged Cubs organization was one fielding error away from winning the National League. Pinning the blame on entrepreneurs and insufficient Jumbotrons is superficial and dumb.

As for the bitchy neighbors, I never said they were free from blame. Selling tickets to the rooftops without kicking money to the team putting on the games was an all-time dick move and they were right to get smacked down for it. Obviously they should have been good partners with the Cubs, but there's a difference between being partners and getting steamrolled in the name of a billionaire's revenue streams. It's a neighborhood, not a Cubs Commerce Zone. The team has profited immensely from being part of a vibrant urban fabric. I wouldn't have become a Cubs fan if I didn't think they were bigger than baseball. I'd have probably just rooted for the Brewers or Braves or something.

Kind of amazed that between "it's the team's fault" and "it's the businesses' fault," saying "both sides are at fault" inspired the most ire of anyone in the thread. What a day!

I'll pay for that with other events and concerts and the huge per ticket fees the Cubs would owe me for this year when they have massive attendance numbers.

So, just to be clear, you believe that Ricketts would have been smart to sell Wrigley Field and get a good deal on rent the day he bought the team?

Other events and concerts wouldn't be allowed under an arrangement similar to the White Sox. IFSA needs White Sox consent as there needs to be certain buffers between game days to fix the field post events. Ever wonder why Cell never has events?

Good luck servicing debt for the $500M renovations. Your agreement would have the following structure:

Paid Attendance Range in Season Fee Per Paid Attendance Ticket
0 – 1,925,000 $0
1,925,001 – 2,425,000 $3.00
2,425,001 – 2,625,000 $4.00
2,625,001 – 2,825,000 $5.00
2,825,001 and above $7.00

It's a fantastic heist of taxpayer's coffers.

But who cares! We have a bar like the Cubs do! Also we now have a Jumbotron like the Cubs do!!!!

Can't wait for Jerry to hit up State of Illinois to get his own hotel at our expense!

Other events are allowed at US Cellular. There aren't many there for other "reasons" but they do happen. And, with the Cubs as good as they are, the per ticket attendance fees would be quite good. Considering the record for attendance at Wrigley is 3.3 million and they added seats since then I think I'd do pretty well. I'd also own a hotel and other outside entertainment since that was part of the $500 million.

I don't think you answered this before. Would it have been smart for Tom Ricketts to sell Wrigley Field when he bought the team?

Why was it considered absolutely vital in all deals that Wrigley and the Cubs were sold together? Why is it that Tom Ricketts never, even for a second, threatened to move the Cubs to any venue but Wrigley Field and never even considered rebuilding it from scratch?

You just can't win this one. The Cubs owning Wrigley Field is better for them than ANY public stadium deal that exists. Do you not realize just how much money Ricketts is going to make off of Wrigley Field in the next 20 years? Elmhurst Steve laid it out well.

You can't honestly make a case that the Cubs would be in a stronger financial position if they had the same deal as the White Sox. I understand you have a strong desire to hate on that deal, and it has downsides and benefits for both parties, but the Sox would trade with the Cubs in a second for what the Cubs have. I mean, I'm pretty sure if the city/state offered to sell US Celluar Field right now to Jerry for $1 that he would jump at the chance.

How many years since it was built have the Sox been under that 1,925,000 attendance figure? Probably all but a 1-2.

Owning Wrigley is best option because the White Sox option is unavailable. You blindly ignore the revenue from the hotel and outside entertainment would go to the Cubs!

The benefit per Thompson of the White Sox arrangement is Illinois owns the property once the lease is done.

Until the lease is over all revenue from everything would go to the Cubs: concessions, tickets, signage, parking, etc.

You receive a token rent payment and ticket fees
