http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2016/05/17/bill-would-drastically-change-way-comed-charges-customers/

A bill set to be in front of a state legislative committee Thursday could increase your electricity bill.

CBS 2’s Marissa Bailey explains, the way you are charged for electricity could change dramatically.

Right now, you only pay for the power you use.

But if a new bill moves forward in Springfield, your monthly electricity bill could be based on the highest amount of power you use on any given day

The so-called “demand charge” would change the way that all residential consumers are charged for electricity.

The new pricing would look at peak electricity usage, Monday through Friday, in 30-minute increments, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Your bill will be based on the 30-minute period that’s the highest.

“Consumers lose control over their ability to manage their bills with a proposal like this,” said AARP spokesman Gerardo Cardenas. “This has never been done in the United States before.”

“There’s no way for the consumer to understand what they’re being charged for, how much that they’re actually using.”

ComEd claims 60 percent of customers will see a drop in their bill and 75 percent will see less than a $3 change per month.

The company says this is more fair.

“If I’m using a greater portion in the grid, then I should be paying for more of the use of the grid than a customer who is not similarly situated,” said a ComEd official.

ComEd says it has plenty of tools available to help people manage the cost of electricity.

Here's a link to that insanity -- http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=1585&GAID=13&GA=99&DocTypeID=SB&LegID=88279&SessionID=88

That sounds like a terrible idea. But I am sure the proper people were paid off so it will pass through.

Your highest usage based on a 30 min span? If that's correct that makes zero sense for the consumer as it makes any attempt to decrease use and be more efficient a useless endeavor.

Fuck ComEd.

I want exclusive use of the portion of the grid that I'm paying for for the month.

If they charge anybody else for my portion when I'm not using it, I'm suing.

Fuck ComEd.

Amen, brother.

Now, I don't know nothin' from nothin', but on that bottom link I added, the latest entry (for yesterday) says this: Senate Floor Amendment No. 3 Pursuant to Senate Rule 3-8(b-1), this amendment will remain in the Committee on Assignments. I don't know what that means, but it doesn't read to me like they intend to vote or otherwise do anything with it, so the story said they'd vote on it today, but again that sentence doesn't seem to indicate any type of vote being taken.

Still, anyone who even drafted the thing should be slowly dropped into a dull woodchipper.

Also, I wonder how that would affect the few people that have windmills set up on their property to generate and, occasionally, "sell back" electricity to ComEd (et al).

I just knew there was something more than laying off meter readers when they rolled out the new "smart" meters.

Whoever even sponsored this bill should be never forgotten. This is shameless gilding of the lily.

Every. Time. I heard that suckass commercial with that smarmy broad saying "the smart grid is coming" (it's apparently been coming forever 'cause that commercial seems about as old as that Discount Tire spot) there was just no end to my irritation and ire, and that was without concrete examples of future fuckery like we have before us presently.

How is it mathematically possible to use your highest 30 minutes, then say there is a 60 percent chance your bill will go down? Makes no sense.

So if you run your air for 5 minutes you could be billed as though you ran it for 24 hours?

30min chunks from 6am - 10pm. You are then charges on the biggest 30min chunk.

So yeah.

It's not the AC so much as it is a 1200 watt hair dryer that worries me. That, and using the microwave for more than 2 minutes at a time.

back in the 50's when nuclear power was being promised, they claimed your bill would only be a few cents a month because nuclear power was so cheap to produce.

so they went ahead and chose to install complex and dangerous reactors, instead of molten-salt breeder reactors that surely would have provided safe, nearly cost free energy. this way they can ensure nuclear power doesnt take more than 30% market share and subsequently people get charged for complex nuclear power and coal based power.

its almost like the companies who owned the patents to breeder reactors didnt have any insides to the coal industry... ahem...

At its best, the Breeder Reactor system produces no nuclear waste whatever - literally everything eventually gets used. In the real world, there actually may be some residual material that could be considered waste, but its half-life - the period of time it takes for half the radioactivity to dissipate - is on the order of thirty to forty years. By contrast, the half-life for the stuff we presently consider nuclear waste is over 25,000 years!

Imagine a transformed energy landscape, where there is no nuclear waste problem, no power shortages, a safe and inexhaustible supply of inexpensive electricity. France has constructed and used Breeder Reactors like this for many years. So have the British and the Japanese. So why not the United States?

We invented the technology but then made a political decision back in 1977 that has accomplished nothing but to create immense piles of long-lived, highly radioactive material that we cannot use for anything, and worse - we must safely store for more than its half-life of 25,000 years.

http://www.argee.net/DefenseWatch/Nucle ... actors.htm

you see, its not that we have an energy crisis, or a nuclear waste problem. we have a government problem. the citizens of the world are being raped and their home land is being shit on.

The fact that this new billing idea is complete a is completely asinine and evil is the very reason I suspect it will be passed.
Our state loves stupid shit like this.

Illinois has gone from among the 15 cheapest states for residential electricity, around 8 cents per kilowatthour in 2014, to among the 15 most expensive as of February this year, about 12 cents per kilowatthour for residential juice.

for whatever reason, commercial electricity rates have not risen at all in that time, still down around 8 cents.

Illinios should have among the 10 cheapest electricity supplies in the country--being 1 of 10 states in which the majority of electrical power is nuclear. Illinois accounts for 10% of all nuclear power generated in the US.

Thats crazy... In wi our company gets charged around 20 cents a kwh on average. But most of our usage is on peaj demand times
