First ~3 seasons of Buffy were, at the time, pretty much unlike anything else in the history of television, at least the history of US network TV. Great TV, tightly-scripted, complicated-for-tv characters, a compelling 2 or 3 season story arc--but not easily accessible if tried you to jump in mid-stream.

I do recall Buffy falling off in quality once Whedon took half the characters over to Angel; as well as Whedon having other pet projects he wanted to work on (Serenity? Firefly?).

People often credit the Sopranos with getting people to take TV seriously as a medium and having writing/acting equal to that of cinema--but it was Buffy, along with Homicide, that first
raised the bar for television.

Dont think I've watched more than ep here or there of a few scripted network shows since the Sopranos/Six Feet Under revolution in cable tv.

Someone tried to get me to watch House a few years back. Thought I'd like it. I did. The first episode I watched. Then we watched a few more. It was the same damn thing, just slightly different set of facts. Jeez. Forgot how fucking formulaic most network tv shows are. Every damn episode is exactly the same as every other episode of the series.

X-Files toggled between redundant soap opera drama and completely awesome one-off episodes; often written by guest writers. William Gibson wrote ' Kill Swith'. Dunno who wrote the 'Home' ep of X-files; but I only saw it once, aired around Halloween that year and still remember how delightfully f'd up it was. And the episode with the guy from Jeopardy and the guy from Match Game? Terrific fun.

Homicide was nothing but quality, front-to-back, every season, every episode. I think its shite time-slot--10 pm Fridays? iirc--kept it from ever getting a proper audience/recognition.

Six Feet Under is probably the best finale I can remember.

Angel was a good example of Whedon's ability. The finale was pretty good not the best but it was a way better show and ending than Buffy was. It really was pretty good television for its time. Does not hold up though.

Homicide: Life on the Streets was pretty amazing for the first several seasons. The time slot killed it, you are very correct. No streaming for it anywhere...and the box set is expensive. You can catch some episodes on YouTube.

For the record I loved Firefly but Whedon is a bit too deified and I'm not a huge fan of what he's done with the Avengers

I fucking am petrified of this next one sucking out loud if for no other reason than Mystique is apparently the good-guy (girl?) leader. That's like filming a 3 Stooges episode and making Curly Joe the leader.

30 Rock, The Office, and Parks and Recreation all had great finales.

Though, only 30 Rock of those shows were consistently good throughout.

It was good, but not as good as Breaking Bad's finale, IMHO. The last two or three seasons of SFU sucked for the most part.
