I don't think as people would make the Dylan argument as the author would lead you to believe. 20th century American music, but not Rock and Roll, per se. Chuck Berry I'm on board with, or Iggy Pop.

I'd put in for Hendrix. Between the early stuff backing up Little Richard & the Isley Brothers to all of his music (which allows for a discussion of Dylan the writer) his look & sound was unmistakable all the way through. Plus the dead at 27 part provides a "dangerous rock star" background, plus it forever locked him in as a young vibrant star/musician.

Does anyone really want to look at the bloated Elvis or Jim Morrison, lesbian looking McCartney or most of the stuff Jagger made after the late seventies?

Pete Wentz makes Morrissey look like David Lee Roth.

Look man, you can listen to Jimi but you can't hear him.

What about his rhythm section?

The only Jimmi that will be remembered is Jimmy Page.

I agree on Elvis, Beatles and Zep. You can add Dylan, the Byrds or CSN for their harmonies but not the Stones. The Stones were popular, but I don't think they'll be remembered as one of the greats. I never have an urge to hear a Stones' song, which isn't true of the others mentioned. It's because of Jagger's vocals. He's the worst singer of them all of a major group.

Madonna is not rock, she's pop.

None of the "should be" groups will be remembered, because they're shite, including Jimmi.

I would add one more that will be remembered: the Police.

Elvis
Beatles
Led Zepp
Credence
Pink Floyd
Metallica
Nirvana

I can't think of any other "rock" band that would fit the mold after that -- the rock/pop line got blurred too much.

Jack White isn't memorable at all. He's almost as boring as Dave Grohl.
