I know I should be annoyed by Rongey's laugh...but I love it. It sounds genuine. Goff laughing sounds nervous to me...he's not really cracking up, it's verbal filler.

Anything that gets more drops played is ok with me.

Well dan, if you get that excited over a players WAR, maybe you should have an idea what WAR is beyond the basic definition of wins above replacement level. Or you could stick with the tried and true critique where you yell "HE'S COSTING THEM ___WINS"

Of all of the new age stats WAR seems by far the most made-up. Did the White Sox do something to Dan? He delights in their demise. He's the definitive sell-out.

How could he not know this? The answer is "no", because the "wins" in WAR are only estimates of what a theoretical team of AAAA players would do in an MLB season (or comparable time frame), and how much better they would be with Player X replacing one player in their ranks, or how much better Team Y is as a whole. WAR itself is a decent predictor of team performance, with an r-squared of .74, but it's nowhere near a 1:1 comparison.



It's meant to be a context/league/park neutral way to discuss player values across teams, leagues, and eras. A +4 WAR player could have meant as many as 5 or more actual wins to a team, or he could have actually cost them a couple of "real" games.

This was a good thread right up until Bernstein was introduced into it. I'd almost turned on the show.
