I think you have preface this with solos that have capable guitarists that are noisy and a waste of time.
1) Iron Maiden - Can i Play with Madness. Great band with 2 amazing lead guitarists.....and THAT's what they come up with?
2) Agree with Smashing Pumpkins. Billy CAN shred....just listen to "Bury me". I remember first hearing "Zero" and going...."Huh?????" Easpecially since the song itself was great.

What about "Won't Back Down?"? Solo suits the song perfectly with slide guitar.

Pretty much all slayer solos are the same. Much better riff writers and melody writing. It's not even mindless shredding it's more just reusing the same lines over again. Most guys do it is just more annoying with skater because the riffs are so good.

True. Good point. As I think about it more they had some good solos on the Show No Mercy album too though. The Antichrist has a great solo in particular. They just weren't as good at it as other thrash metal bands like Metallica, Megadeth and Testament were. Great riff writers for sure though.

That all being said Kerry Kings solo in You gotta fight for your right to party has to take the cake. It is just awful hit mess. Not musical rhythmic or anything. I dare say that Jknas boy could do better.

Whatchoo talking about Willis? That's urban legend anyway. Rick Rubin recruited him. Whoever played it if it wasn't king (that's what I've always heard) played one awful solo.

Kerry King played on No Sleep til Brooklyn.

I've said it often....we lost the wrong Slayer guitarist.

Well yeah, didn't Hanneman write a huge portion of the material?

The solo is pointless and doubles the length of what would probably be a decent pop song without it.

Yea. His lyrics and songs were better too. 90% of every popular Slayer song is written by Hanneman.

No collection of awful Slayer solos is complete without Kerry King's hilariously half-assed attempt on Bloodline.

I know he played on that but the internets and urban legend also tell me he played on fight. Those two sources are not reliable admittedly but that is what I have always heard from my yoot on.

Hanneman is by far the better soloist of the two. Neither are amazing though. King was a real prick to me twice so I kinda have it out for that midget anyway. I like that King says Slayer fans aren't ready to hear Gary Holt yet. Ummmm yeah every thrash fan has been hearing Gary for a long time and he has been in slayer since before Jeff died.

I remember reading that comment about Holt and just thinking "fuckkkkkk youuuu". Gary Holt has always been far superior than King at everything. Exodus is the fucking metal goods.

Not surprised King was a prick to you. He's been the biggest asshole in metal for awhile.

I think we are all in violent agreement on Kerry King. I still love Slayer, but Kerry makes it really difficult. Gary Holt is the best thing that could ever happen to Slayer given the circumstances.

As much as Hanneman did write the best stuff and was the better guitarist, in all fairness, his alcoholism had already consumed him. God Hates Us All was the beginning of the end.

A healthy Hanneman and Holt on guitar with King out would have been the coolest ever.

They had Michael Jackson's "Beat It" on the radio today, which is really good song.

But I can't figure out Eddie Van Halen's solo on it. Either it's one of the worst of all-time or the best.

I would say listen to John 5 version of it. It sounds better in that heavier dynamic. Eddies comes on a little too Eddie for the mix of the track if that makes sense. It's a good solo regardless though and I am not an EVH fanboy. Totally respect his playing but not really my wheelhouse. I am in awe of his riffs though. I.e. Ain't talking bout love is such a great riff and the mix is perfect for that era.

I like Slayer a lot...but not for guitar solos, or guitar. It's really all about Tom and Dave.

Bury Me...great fkn Billy solo.

Pretty amazing cover. But what you find with these guys is while they can play other peoples songs flawlessly, they can't compose anything themselves. That's where the true genius is.

I like pre- Permanent Vacation Aerosmith and The Beatles just fine, But that cover doesn't really bother me, probably because that song isn't that great to begin with. I am more put off by songs that I really like covered by artists that I really like that just don't work. Sinead O'Connor covering "All Apologies" come to mind. Or Guns N Roses covering "New Rose."

JORR (or anyone, I suppose) do you remember an album of Thin Lizzy songs by Chicago Punk bands, maybe 1994?

Agreed along with Aerosmith's "Train Kept A Rollin".

Another is Billy Corgan's "Landslide." Ouch.
