My daughter was at a basketball camp this past week. During some of the downtime she accidentally spilled some pop on her friends laptop. It kept working for awhile but later shut down and hasn't turned back on.

My question is what do I need to do? I don't want to blow it out of proportion. Do I wait for them to contact me? Do I contact them first? How do I go about resolving the situation? Are we supposed to offer to get it fixed or replace it?

Never dealt with anything like this and not sure what to do

Contact them and offer to pay for a new laptop. That's your only move here really.

You should offer to fix it yourself, and show up at their house with a bunch of tools. They'll probably just say it's cool.

You gotta make it right, RFDC. Offer to take care of the repair or replacement. What if it happened to your daughter's laptop? You would hope the parents would be reasonable and take care of it with no problems. Girls can be tough on each other and you don't want to give them a reason to possibly give your daughter grief. Do the right thing... you'll be glad in the long run. Good luck, sir.

what if instead of killing their laptop, your daughter had killed their daughter? Just replace it?

Who the fuck says "pop"?

Buy a new laptop. They're cheap now. Or ask if she'd prefer a tablet. They're cheaper and cooler.

What if someone offered to wager $1000 with you on whether or not Tim Tebow would take a snap in the NFL in the 2015 season; and instead of saying yay or nay to the bet right away, you waited several months until Chip Kelly brought Tim Tebow into training camp the WEEK BEFORE the season was to kick-off, and then you spent hours clicking through BigFan's broken ass, no-search working web site to find that profferred wager you had either declined or ignored and YOU FUCKING JUMPED ON IT LIKE BROCK TURNER JUMPING ON A PASSED OUT IMU IN A LIL BLACK DRESS and you said "I'll take that bet, $1000 says Tim Tebow takes a snap this season". And then smugly sat back and waited to--cha-ching--cash in.

Cept you didn't count on Chip Kelly being Chip Kelly and cutting Tebow the same damn week. Ut-oh. Tim Tebow doesn't make any regular season NFL roster, much less take any snaps for any NFL team in an actual NFL regular season game.

You took the wager, you lost--now what do you do?

What do you do?

any idea how old the laptop is? also what brand? If it's a non-Mac, send them a check for $200. If it's a Mac, well, what's your daughter doing hanging out with gay homosexuals in the first place.

Nope. Just the ones who use Apple products. And the ones who throw hissy-fits over the way the board they sold for cash on the barrelhead is being run by the fine folks who bought it from them. Oh, and Sparky.

This should be your daughters final basketball camp. If Bobby Knight ran this camp there would be no downtime. Run them until they cannot eat supper. :)

Thanks for all your replies. Rereading my initial post I was not as clear as I wanted. But I/we have every intention of making the situation right.

My daughter has talked to the family. They are taking it to a friend of theirs who repairs computers. When they find out the cost she is going to pay for it. If it cannot be repaired we will figure things out from there. It is a Macbook Air.
