Thanks for all your replies. Rereading my initial post I was not as clear as I wanted. But I/we have every intention of making the situation right.

My daughter has talked to the family. They are taking it to a friend of theirs who repairs computers. When they find out the cost she is going to pay for it. If it cannot be repaired we will figure things out from there. It is a Macbook Air.

Don't buy a brand new laptop. If you crash into my car your insurance company won't give me a brand new car. If it needs to be replaced find one on Ebay and give it to her.

sounds like they kept using the laptop after RFDC's clumsy offspring showered it in HFCS. If they had shut it down, wiped it off/soaked up the soda as best they could and let it air dry overnight at least, the damage wouldn't have led to total system failure.
