It is not a stable religion. A perfect fit for these nutjobs to act out on their inner demons. It is only going to get worse the more it grows in the US. This will not be the last nutjub that pledges to ISIS and does something horrific. How many attacks until you finally admit extreme radical islam is a problem in the US?

I'm sure you can figure out why. It's okay to say that he was a radical American homophobe.

If I snapped tomorrow and called the cops and said that I was slaughtering a group of people (that I was known to dislike) for ISIS no one that knows me would believe it.

Isn't U.S. sanctioned militarism in the Middle East more of a problem?

How do you know that the religion isn't stable? How long were you a Muslim? This guy wasn't religious so why did he hates gays so much? Tens of thousands of people are murdered annually in this country and they aren't killed by Muslims.

He had supposedly communicated with them before.

The FBI had also investigated him twice.

This is how the future of ISIS attacks abroad are going to go. They recruit and radicalize people who can more easily maneuver in our country. We saw the same thing with San Bernadino. I'm sure as more information comes out it will be clear that this guy didn't just decide that he suddenly liked ISIS last week after he decided he wanted to kill a bunch of gay guys and then his hatred of gays was so low that he made it a point to make sure that everyone in the world knew this was an ISIS attack rather than just an attack on a group he doesn't like.

It just doesn't add up. A guy who hates gays would have let the world know that and let that be the message. His message was clear here.

I never said that he didn't sympathize with ISIS years before shooting up a club. I said that he was a homophobe prior to becoming a sympathizer and he had made threats about harming gays before. Americans still have problems with gays. He was an American that has hated gays for years if not all of his life.

Seems pretty quick to declare that he was not religious when he pledges himself to a religious group. Always have to fall over ourselves declaring how beauty this man-made mythology every time this happens. Not all Muslims... hear it again and again.

His family and the people who knew him said that. You don't have to be religious to be a terrorist sympathizer. These groups prey on people like him. That's how they're able to recruit a white girl from Utah and some kid from rural America. I'm not trying to stop you from being a bigot if that's what you choose to be.

No one is doubting he hated gays for longer.

He pledged to them. He did it at the time that they said was extra special for killing the infidels. He was investigated twice by the FBI already for terrorist ties.

I'm sure pretty much all terrorists hated gay people before they joined too. The type of person that is accepting of gay people probably isn't going to become a terrorist.

my question on this type of stuff always is...would they go through with it if they hadn't been exposed to the propaganda? Would they just hate people and not do anything about it? I don't know the answer.

They're looking for acceptance. They may not do something like this but they're likely to do something else to be accepted.

This guy appeared to not only be a homophobe but also a women beater.

This is crap. And a huge part of the problem. Muslims have terrible ideas and some of them are carrying out horrific acts based on the doctrine. And there are always apologists who scream "bigot" at anyone who tries to address the issue.

I call a spade a spade, it just is what it is. This guy was no more Muslim than you or I. I may be a little homophobic myself but I don't want to kill anyone who is gay.

Other than his ties to Muslim groups and shouting Allauh Akbar.

"Muslims have terrible ideas" is a generalization. There are over a Billion Muslims and if even 2% ran around screaming "Death to America" and attempting to act on it there would be much more violence in the world. The vast majority of Muslims that proclaim Death to America trace their heritage to countries in which United States military operations exists.

Similar to "KKK members have terrible ideas". I'm comfortable with both generalizations.

Most Muslims don't wish death upon America. Most KKK do wish for the annihilation of black people. Bad comparison

Most Muslims do think homosexuals are an abomination. Most Muslims do think women should obey their husbands. Most Muslims do believe honor killings can be justified. Apt comparison.

Christians believe that homosexuality is an abomination also. Christians also believe that abortion is akin to murder. Christians also believe in an "eye for an eye". Would those also classify as "terrible ideas" under the criteria that you provided?

In addition, the aforementioned KKK also considered its members to be god fearing, law abiding Christians.

Do you want to discuss Christians now or should we save it for the next time one shoots up a gay nightclub? A lot of people seem to think that the bad ideas of others somehow mitigate those of Islam.

They don't but Christians aren't being targeted because a few fools have "terrible ideas".

I just really think that the religious angle has received too much play and the political aspect hasn't received much if any at all. I really think that the reason it hasn't is because it will force America to look inward at the role that it has played in all of this. It is much easier to play gotcha games with religion and state that ours is better than theirs. Policies have contributed to the level of antipathy. Religion is used for recruitment purposes but U.S policy is what fuels the anger. It doesn't justify the actions taken but the people of this country would never stand for the sort of acts that we have committed against the people of the Middle East.

Christians in this country are not being discarded because of the beliefs of a few people. The government is not banning all Christians because of Timothy McVeigh. That was my point.

What's with the Chicago media's obsession with tying a tragedy to the local audience? I had WGN on last night, and they broke in with a "We have a Chicago connection to the tragedy in Orlando!" Turns out, a cousin of one of the victim's lives in Chicago. Whoop-dee fucking doo.

If you expect me to defend Christianity, you're going to be disappointed. But what I will say is that the two religions are at different points in their development. There are certainly political causes that bear some responsibility for that fact, but it's a fact nonetheless. This is not a matter of Islam bumping up against Christianity. It's a matter of Islam bumping up against a largely secular society where religion for most is largely ceremony and tradition rather than a set of hard held beliefs.

"Muslims have terrible ideas" is a generalization.

Similar to "KKK members have terrible ideas". I'm comfortable with both generalizations.

Most Muslims don't wish death upon America. Most KKK do wish for the annihilation of black people. Bad comparison

Most religions do think homosexuals are an abomination. Most religions do think women should obey their husbands. A small number of Muslims do believe honor killings can be justified. Apt comparison.
