I'll nap once in awhile. anything less than 60 minutes sucks though... makes me more tired. 90 minutes is solid.

Never forget.

A guy who's family owned this place used to work with me. His dad also owned a restaurant right there called Mr. Christopher's. One time we were at the Can Can Room in Vegas with this other dope we worked with, a Serbian named Pete. Pete was all fucked up and groping the girls. The bouncer had to keep coming over and warning him. Joey Nap and I were just sitting there with our best strip club manners, but Pete was getting wild. Finally, two bouncers came over and said, "You guys are outta here." As they escorted us to the door Pete kept repeating, "They're nothing but whores, I got no respect." And he pronounced "whores" like Ralph Cifaretto in The Sopranos- "who-ers".

Were you around to experience the shift from old Las Vegas to what it is today?

It is my opinion that an architect/engineer/land planner/appraiser etc., who is lead representative in a matter before a city council or board is engaging in the unlicensed practice of law. I am not alone in this opinion. However, the bar has been lax about seeking a ruling from governing bodies and so the practice continues.

I love a 15 minute nap, especially if it is going to be a workday that stretches into night.

A nice 30 minutes on a cold winter day is also great.

The first few times I was out there I guess it was close to what you might call "old school". Every casino had a floor show with t0pless showgirls in those crazy costumes. I used to hang out at the Stardust to bet horses and sports and the odds boards were written with grease pencil. Then Steve Wynn built the Mirage and later there was Treasure Island and shitty Excalibur and the "kid friendly" era. During that time I liked to stay downtown at the Golden Nugget. Now of course, it's the restaurant/nightclub/bottle service era. Gambling almost seems to have taken a backseat. I get a kick out of seeing these goofy Midwestern girls teetering awkwardly on their four inch heels at 3:00 a.m.

I think my time there would be described as the post family friendly era. It seems like I started going just after they recognized the folly of family friendly LV and were now selling the place as the go to for packs of 20-30s year old males. Sure there were women there but it seemed like the majority were brahs with 3-4 stuffed in a room (including cot) with enough disposable cash to blow a few hundred gambling and then have an overpriced meal at a table for 20.

This is the New York, New York, Paris era.

Lots of money to be made on those girls trips. I think people would rather lose their money trying to hook up than gambling. I was not a fan of Vegas, I felt like I was on candid camera the whole time.

Never used to be a nap guy but every Saturday and Sunday after golf I usually get a 20-30 minute one in after walking 18 holes.
Sometimes I will do the same after work before the wife gets home. Short but effective, at least for me.

best Nap of the modern era

I bet the Raiders lead the NFL in having employed guys named Napoleon in the history of the NFL.

3 Napoleons by my count. Can anyone name the three without researching?

My dad had the next edition of that wagon. The Mercury Colony Squire. Learning to drive in that boat was a challenge.

My dad also had/has no swagger. But he HAS believed in naps for 45 years now.

Joe, all of your stories seem to be set in the early 80s but the pictures always seem to be from the 70s. Are you a time traveler?

As I approached 50, the nap became much more appealing.

Here is a great timeline resource for The Las Vegas strip & Casinos.
I started going in the mid 1980's. It was great then. Still love the place but I miss the old classic joints like Dunes, Stardust, Sahara, Riviera. I still cant believe that the Las Vegas Hilton is no more & is now The Westgate.

Did any casinos ever stiff you when they owed you $1000?

I was young for D.E, and got stuck in the second session of the Summer. First group all had brand new Chevy Novas to drive. One of the pranksters drained all the oil from their engines one night, and all six or eight cars seized up the next day. The school district grabbed a fleet of gov't surplus vehicles for our group to drive- the Ford Wagon was Air Force blue, in and out. I told the instructor I grew up on the farm, he bet me I couldn't back that boat through the figure eight cone course without hitting any. Victory got me out of parking lot driving for the rest of class. Truth be told, I had been driving trucks and tractors for years already, often miles down the road. First trip at age 13 was a load of corn to the mill to be ground for the cows, old red Ford truck, 3 on the tree, no power anything. Had a flat on the way home and had to stop at the neighbors for help changing it. First job at 14 was a five mile bike ride to another farm, fire up the 1977 GMC, 24 foot covered stake bed dump, 366 gasser with four speed and two-speed splitter. Learned the hard way how not to high side a single screw rear on a bumpy field road.

DAMN! If there had been some punk rock or straight bourbon drinking at a cool club, that could have been a JORR story,,,, COOL!
