Shakes opinion in this matter is biased due to Disney's anti-semitism

It's the 3rd child and they were on vacation. If they are not having a melt down that kid is fine doing what kids do. He could have been 3 ft out of the water with a parent right next to him and been taken down.

I have twin two year olds. They shouldnt even be awake at 930 let alone splashing around on a beach. I understand you are on vacation but use your common sense.

do you have proof to back that claim up? i hadnt read that disney was advised they had a giant aligator problem that put guests lives at risk if more protection against alligator attacks was not implemented..... they have a body of water with wildlife... they posted signs telling their guests to stay out of the water (no swimming to me as a reasonable person means stay out of the water). to me, no swimming is sufficient.... if having an alligator on the sign is needed for you to not ignore no swimming signs... i dont know what to say to you other than you arent a reasonable person.

shakes wrote:
They are also on notice that little kids play in and around that lake and some even go in the water despite the sign.

again, what can disney be reasonably expected to do to protect it's guests?... they asked their guests to stay out of the water.... i cant fault them for parents who ignore signs

shakes wrote:

actually you do need to be captain hindsight to point this out... the fact that it took an alligator attack to bring up these alligator safety concerns is the definition of captain hindsighting...

What? It's a vacation. Who cares if they're up at 9:30? My 2yo daughter was up at 9:30 when we were in Florida last year and she somehow managed to not get eaten by an crocodile. When we go back next month she'll probably be up that late again and still be able to fend them off.

They didn't ask guests to stay out of the water. They said no swimming. Those are not the same thing.

I'm picturing a toddler walking the edge and throwing rocks and possible having an ankle in. I haven't been to disney yet, and normally yell at my kids constantly for things, that would not be one of them. I don't connect "No Swimming" at a fancy resort lake with there be alligators in it. No swimming signs are used to keep people from swimming when no life guard is present. I also have never been to Florida so I have seen the prevalence of this type of signage.

No kidding. It's a vacation. Maybe they just arrived. I don't know. Maybe the kids were sleeping on the plane and thus were wide awake at the time. Whatever. Why the time matters to you so much is weird. The gator could have got a kid just as easily at noon as it did at this time. But it seems a noon killing would have been acceptable parenting to you. You're kind of missing the point. It's about "NO SIGNS".

Alligators do their hunting around dawn and dusk, just like cats. Noon is probably when alligators are just chillin' out.

To me, no swimming always meant stay out of the water for some reason that they don't say.

When I was in Disney it was OBVIOUS that these weren't swimming lakes at a different resort even though it had "beaches".

Well you don't have to be swimming for a gator to come out of the water and attack.
But this kid was in the water.

If the gator got him in a walkway then it is a different discussion.

all accounts I've seen have him at most a foot into the water.

Either way, that's irrelevant. Even if the kid was swimming laps in the middle of the lake I would hold Disney at fault for creating a dangerous situation for its customers without proper warning. Having a really nice beach and lake and putting a innocuous "no swimming" sign is, imo, not enough of a warning or deterrent to prevent people from wanting to explore what amounts to an attractive nuisance owned and controlled by Disney.

Throw in the potential notice of dangerous alligators in the area and Disney is fucked.

Once again, the parents didn't know there were gators there. So that's the point. This poster would be upset if the kids were at McDonalds at 9:30. Time is the issue to him.

And I'll bet, though I can't prove it, Gators have attacked people in the day. In the history of gator attacks, I'm sure it's happened.

YES. JESUS CHRIST. BIG DIFFERENCE. There is a pond by me where I fish every now and then that says "No swimming". But I know there would be no danger if I did swim. I know a shark or gator wouldn't get me if I did.

And couldn't the gators go on land to attack people? So even if you're not in the water, they could kill you. Shouldn't a sign be up for that possibility?

They generally don't venture too far from the water. Alligators are lazy as shit if there's not an opportunity for easy success, just like the Blackhawks after Martin Luther King Day.

First, this is Disney. There entire brand is on a magical carefree vacation. I can not be convinced they didn't warn for gators as not wanting to alarm guests.

Second, it's Disney. People go from all over the world. How does banning an exercise translate to man eating reptiles are present in the lake.

I'll be taking my first trip to Disney this fall my understanding is from the second you touch down at the airport you are in a Disney shuffle or on Disney property. If they aren't warning tourist of gators, there is a good chance the tourist won't know the true risk.

Once again, I'll bet you a gator has attacked people on land. I mean in the long history of gator attacks, I'm sure it's happened. So Disney should warn people of such a remote possibility.

They have a duty to properly warn or at least remove fucking alligators from a lake with "beaches." They will settle out of court for a fuckload.

then walk around in a fucking bubble... that way nothing can hurt you. people expecting protection from every possible peril is what pisses me off.

you could get a cold from another park patron coughing... you need signs up for that at all eating areas. the firework show at epcot every night should have a sign stating loud noises are coming... the sign can rise up from the water with a spotlight on it... and then be broadcast in 30 different languages... all to protect people before the fireworks show goes off and so little kids can safely be escorted off the premises before the fireworks start.

while were at it, every walking path should have defined pavement markings so you can only walk in a certain direction... pedestrian traffic signals should be put in so nobody runs in to each other while walking....

every single ingredient for every single piece of food sold should be posted on the menu boards with calories, fat etc contents. because some of the food may be unhealthy and you need disney to protect you from the unhealthy food.

every patron should wear a life vest when they board the water trolleys for the entire ride... because the boat could sink and just having vests on board is not good enough.... because what if some kid fell over the deck...?

the disney buses should all have safety belts and no one should be allowed to stand... because what if the bus driver passes out and his foot stays on the pedal and the bus crashes at 100 mph in to a wall.... or better yet what if the bus crashes in to a fucking lagoon? all bus riders need to wear life vests too in case that happens.

if you need something more than a no swimming sign to know to stay the hell out of a lake, then I cant help you... you are just a special person. how many documented aligator attacks have occurred on disney property prior to this poor kid being killed? if the answer is more than 0, then i'd be all for roasting disney for not doing more...

The negligence in this case will be based upon the child's status and the duty Disney owes its customers. This isn't just a kid who wandered upon a lake in the middle of nowhere. It's a kid who was at a resort that markets itself as a kid's wonderland and spends hundreds of millions of dollars a year marketing their great experience to families... and the kid got attacked by an alligator in a foot of water next to a "no swimming" sign. This is cut and dried, and the nature of what I do would make me prone to see Disney's perspective... but I don't. They were negligent.

There are crocs in Florida, not as many as alligators but they're there. Don't think you'll find any in the Amazon though. Did you misspell Africa?

My God. It's not about "Anything". It's about a specific killer animal on the beach of a resort. For you to make it about anything else is stupid.

Can I ask a question to all of you? What's the down side to putting up a "Gators in the water" sign? Other then the expense which some of you were concerned with earlier. Poor Disney and those sheet metal expenses. Trust me guys, Disney can afford it. But other than that, what's the down side?

Better question: what do you think Disney will do with that area now? Leave it as is?
