I got the offer on the new job and it looks like I am going to accept. Only issue is that I cant sign up for insurance until after 30 days of employment. Does your current insurance terminate the moment you quit or is there a grace period? I'd like to avoid having to pay COBRA for a month if I can but I dont want to not have insurance with 3 small kids.

You almost certainly will lose it after your last day from your previous company unless they are really nice.

However, you get a grace period to pay for COBRA so with your time period you may be able to risk not paying it and then if you need it then you can pay for it and you were covered even after the fact.

I seem to remember it was 45 days from the termination of your previous employment.

From what I can find online w/r/t COBRA, it does say 45 days. So I sign up and then dont pay and tell them tough shit. I like this strategy!!!

I believe you are immediately COBRA eligible.

If you pay it within 45 days, even after going to the doctor, it counts. If at 45 days you never use it then you just don't pay for it.

This is what I did.

Does Hank risk having a 'break' in coverage with BRick's strategy, or does that even matter anymore?

I dont think so because I will sign up for Cobra, I just wont pay for it.

I'm sure I'll get screwed somewhere down the road but as long as I dont put my family at risk for those 30 days, I'll live with it.

I would ask your new employer about this too just to make sure. They will guide you through it because it doesn't effect them.

I'm not even sure you "sign up" for COBRA either. You just have a bill you can pay for up to 45 days.

Not with any practical knowledge one way or the other but, rather, just on the surface that seems like a loophole that, for as obvious as it is, would somehow have long since been addressed to prevent clever lads like us from exploiting it.

Just to be safe, you and your family should travel in separate airplanes and never appear in the same place at the same time. You know, like the president and vice president.

Congrats, Hank!

FWIW, I was advised on leaving my last employer that my insurance benefits would run to the end of the month that I left, so...?

That seems to be the norm that I've seen.

Obamacare and the IRS may catch you if you have no insurance for a whole month.

Thanks to both the jokes and the real replies. It sounds like if I work for one day in a month it carries over for the whole month. I just have to time things perfectly. July 1st to be my last day and then start right after the holiday. I'll have around 4-5 days without ins. Just lockdown everyone in the house haha.
