I think there's been speculation that numerous Score Searches were crooked, except for the one Tim Baffoe won, which was just shitty. I believe it was our chip egan who said something like Feder was reporting that Connor McKnight had won before they'd even had the final competition, and Feder is not known to just make shit up. Maya Gavin was in all likelihood selected to keep the FCC at bay. Then there was the time Senor was a judge and picked one of his interns, shortly after offhandedly noting that the Score's interns were the sponsors' sons. That one was my favorite.

Jeez, so much for "fresh talent" then.

Regarding the contests that they've run over the last several years, the only conclusion I have come to is that the "decision" as to who wins is not made by the online voting (done so, in my opinion, to bring traffic to their website) or the judges that are involved in the remote (done so to promote a sponsor). It is made by someome or some people in management. The year I took part in the contest I thought I had a good shot at winning once I was named to the last 4 contestants. I thought the on-air portion where each of us got a half hour to do a sports update and sit in with Hub and Brian Paruch went well. However, during the week leading up to the remote where the winner was chosen a post on the chicagoradioandmedia.com board stated that the winner had already been chosen. That post was made on the Thursday before the event and the message stated "congratulations Connor McKnight". The post was made by someone who followed the industry pretty well and had posted a number of things before that were very credible. Initially, I thought that was the case-considering the source-and I felt pretty relaxed going into the remote. When it came time for the announcement of the winner I really thought I had done well enough to get the job. When Connor's name was mentioned, I immediately thought back to that post and realized that the winners are chosen beforehand.

Connor has done a nice job at the Score. I think he has a bright future in the business. As for those who have won the contest since, I don't know much. I've caught a bit of Berger's show and it is college radio at best. What will come in the future with the contest, I'm not sure. I've never found out what they look for in a winner, but we'll see.

It was all good, but Senor passive-aggressively omitting the Hawks is what really brings it home. Five stars.

No, I haven't forgotten the shittiest thing Dan has done.

That speech will be engraved on the Dan Bernstein Memorial to be built in the middle of Clark Street after the Cubs have permanently shut it down, much like the Gettysburg Address on the Lincoln Memorial.

All of it sounds bad. I think we the listener are unlucky in the fact that the Cubs are killing it ratings wise. It'll be business as usual and we suffer for it.

I love the fact of Goff taking shots at Kap and bragging about ratings. I hope they understand where the ratings are coming from.

Not even the Cubs could save the ratings if there is Bernsie and Big red.

was that steven berger? the best part about listening to his show was that you knew he was fully capable of quality fuck ups and i was alwyas holding out for a gem like "you're listening to jason score live on the berger" or something, but i think the closest we got was "this is steven berger on the score... live on 670 the score!"

i like to think that his #BergerBites segment continued on past his radio show/career and still to this day his legions of ~10s of diehard listeners still use the hashtag #BergerBites to help propagate the spreading of pertinent yet succinct information across the internet that much more mellifluously than any #SportSpurts could ever dream of doing.

anyways, whatever's going on with terry you wish him nothing but the best and a speedy recovery. yeah he's obviously not as good/sharp/trying as he used to be, but seeing as radio is a medium of familiarity and consequent comfort i've realized over the last year or so that it will be a pretty big "oh shit" moment when it dawns on me that i can't turn on my radio between 1-6pm and know that terry's there if i want him to be. c'est la vie, no?

and hey for the ~300-500k/yr or whatever he makes to do ISDN from home 2-3 times a week = keep on taking that money while you can, terry. take it from me that retirement is pretty fucking boring once you're fully in its throes.

Yeah, that was Steven Berger (though I can't confirm that his dad's business was a sponsor, just that Dan implied you need an in like that for that sweet sweet Score internship). Scorehead (of all people!) and I liveblogged some of his horse-abortion overnight shows.

My favorite fuckup of his, just offhand, was when he was talking about watching sports on TV and said something like "it was great, Jared and Chad were going crazy." Beat. "You don't know them." Beat. "They're my roommates, you see." Um, usually when you do a casual name-drop, the point is that people will know who you're talking about. The most puzzling thing was that this was in a monologue to the audience, not chatting with a producer, where maybe one could infer that Jared and Chad were behind-the-scenes Score people or something, but to just report, by name, the actions of people who have in no way been introduced to the audience was dumbfounding.

It wasn't even so much a blatant fuckup, like "I'm Connor McDoink" or "meet the Score's Anne Maxfield from 12 to noon," as it was a towering demonstration of how little you deserved to be there and how little you learned about broadcasting from interning at a talk station for ~15 weeks, making a lapse in judgment so self-evident that the only conclusion one could draw is that merely being at WSCR made you worse at storytelling than you were before you got there. It was stunning.

I can't blame Berger for thinking that was "good radio" when he was on a station where a guy who once spent an entire fifteen minute segment talking about his busted dishwasher got rewarded with a major daytime shift.

When they rating were bad they blamed it on the Sox. Now that they're decent it has nothing to do with the Cubs.

I was listening that day. Goff spent a lot longer than 15 minutes on that issue,or at least it seemed that way.

I think Bernstein's head would explode if he were paired with Big Red.

They could call it the afternoon foam party.

I'm not missing Boers, AT ALL. He can simply retire now and that would be great.

I think it will be a mix of Rozner and ZZ. I don't mind Rozner on occasion, but I wouldn't say I like him. ZZ makes me want to PTFB.

I agree that if left alone, Bernstein and Mac would be interesting and entertaining, but I'd give 2 weeks before Mac self-destructs.

I never understood the love for Mac. I didnt listen to the Heavy Fuel Crew days so maybe that is where the fond memories come from. MJH was a horse abortion and Mac and Speeeeeeegs was even worse.

No. If it wasnt for Anyone + Spiegs, it would be my least favorite radio show of all time. I'd rather listen to Mully and Hanley.
