Last I heard he was at Yahoo radio.

The Heavy Fuel Crew was the reason Mac has a following. it, along with the Monsters were the pinnacle of sports radio.
MJH could have been good. Mac was still at the top of his game when that show started, but it was doomed for failure with Harry being there. Jurko was good in the beginning but eventually became Ed McMahon.
Mac and Spiegel was garbage. Mac was done by then and there was no chance of him bouncing back without the right partner.

I agree wholeheartedly. Heavy Fuel Crew was the best sports talk show that this city has ever had. McNeil and Boers had good chemistry, were funny as hell and still cared about sports. You always got the feeling that they cared about what they were doing. The bitterness that McNeil developed for the industry started once he was paired with Jiggetts. He hated it and it showed. I also think that he had a problem with the way North was allowed to leverage the situation in order to get his own show.

MjH was good but it could have better if they had a stronger personality to counter McNeil. Boers was that person, while Harry and Jurko werent. His last foray with Speigal was a joke and by that time he was too jaded and beat down to ever really give a damn about improving at his job.

MJH was great. It got me back into sports talk radio.

B&B was a better show but it took me a while to figure it out.

At its best B&B was tolerable. I liked Bernstein as a solo act more than I have ever liked him with Boers. I think part of it has to do with biases that I have for HFC. I also think that Bernstein's bits and comedy is forced. Never seemed like a natural fit. Far too sanctimonious. They also aren't really concerned about sports.

I've got to play the "tell me what you think was good" card.

If B&B was at best tolerable then what do you consider to be great?

Heavy Fuel Crew was a very good show.

North/Jiggetts was also better than Bernstein and Boers.

I listened to the score from the time of their very first broadcast. I stayed with it up until about 2010. Once it became less about sports I stopped listening. McNeil as a brand has always been somewhat overrated. His best work was with Boers. When Boers cared he was the best sports yakker in this city.

Its not about the decade, but if you want to play the "decade" card that era is considered to be the best era in Chicago Sports talk history. Sorry if that pains you so much. Let's see. North, McNeil, Boers, Jiggetts, vs. Bernstein, Holmes, Goff, Speegs, You decide

If you can't name a sports radio show that is better in the past 16 years then you aren't really backing up that B&B was tolerable at best. I really don't know much about 90s sports radio in this city as I was too young to really care about it though I'm sure I listened at some points. I just can't imagine that we hit the year 2000 and all of a sudden Chicago sports radio became a complete suckfest.

I've dislike Bernstein since his days of over inflecting "670 THE SCORE" at the end of his reports. He was ok with Boers when they did middays but that may have been because I rarely listened.

It has been proven over time that B and B are rarely the people's choice when faced with legitimate competition. There are a lot of PDs that would have not renewed them due to their losing a decade of the station destroying its competition.

Bernstein at least watches games and has thoughts and pretend sources that make him look like he's trying, at least.

Terry mails it in. Slappy and Grimace mail it in. Mac has mailed it in for years.

Your "appeal to ignorance" hurts your claims. Also if the best argument for post 2000 radio is that none of the other shows are better thus B&B must be good, then that's rather weak to. It's quite telling that the only personality to ascend to any level of "prominence" is Bernstein. The fact that this board has clamored for the return of McNeil speaks volumes about the state of sports radio post 2000.

To be honest even the rocking 90's was primarily North/Jiggetts and McNeil/Boers. Their other shows sucked.

It wasn't an appeal to ignorance. The 90s may have been the best Chicago radio ever. The point is that it is illogical to think that not a single show has been good since 2000 like there was some sort of magical event that turned it all to garbage.

The fact that you can't name a better show for 16 years, while posting on a Chicago sports radio message board(if that is still what we do here) shows everything that needs to be shown. Otherwise, you just sound like the people that say that music has sucked since the 70s. No it hasn't and it is illogical to think otherwise.

Another reason why the 90s was the best decade in Chicago sports talk radio was that it was fresh and raw. There were better overall personalities, and the large corporate entities had not dug their claws in, yet.

We also tend to remember things in the past more fondly than they actually were.

Just like some people think that SNL was only good the first few years, or that the music they were listening to as a teenager and their twenties are better than what came after.

Most of the people in the 90s stayed around and were still there after that. Somehow I guess they all started to suck though after Y2K.

I have a funny feeling that if someone pulled out a random Score aircheck from the 820 days, not a great moment in the history of the station but just one random day, we'd all think it sounded like shit and wonder what the big deal was.

I didn't make 2000 the cutoff you did. I don't know how long B&B was in existence but If I state that for me it was tolerable then I'm merely providing my opinion. I have a frame of reference that goes back further than you. I didn't start listening to sports talk during the 90's either. I started in the mid eighties as an adolescent/teenager. I used to call into the shows also. My username is derived from that. I'm looking at shows not eras. I provided the source of my bias also. I was always partial to HFC and I also believed that Bernstein worked best solo. Boers was at his best when he worked with McNeil. He became a much angrier guy after working with Bernstein. I can provide reasons for why I feel the way that I feel can you?

The only other show worthy of mention post 2000 is MJH and in my opinion Harry and Jurko were not polished enough to be considered good. Jurko had his moments but the fact that he is an afterthought post Mac says a lot about who he is as a broadcaster.

B&B has been on since the summer of '99. It was indirectly created by, of all people, Mike North.

You did provide the cutoff, and I believe I was even being generous with it. You listed two shows that were gone by 2000.

It is still illogical to think that for the first 8 years Chicago sports radio was awesome, and then for the next 16 years it had one show that was "tolerable at its best" especially when many of the same people were still around.

That is why the "say what you think is good" question does so well. It shows that you are hung up on a certain era, which may have been awesome.

You seem to acknowledge that B&B is the best post 2000 show in Chicago sports radio. If you think it is "tolerable at its best" then why are you even listening any more?

It's probably a lot like SNL. It was groundbreaking and funny for the time but the same skit product now would be called terrible.

The only guy in this city that has really established himself post 2000 is Bernstein and even he started during the 90's. Corporate ownership probably has more to do with than anything because there were stunts that North pulled during the 90's that he wouldn't be able to get away with today.

So basically everyone you loved in the 90s sports talk radio scene suddenly turned bad by 2000?

Do you not see where this is going?

Either they weren't that good, or things aren't as bad as you describe after 2000.

I don't listen anymore and the primary reason that I stopped listening because the focus became less about sports. I do however find it odd that you feel the need to critique an era in which you have virtually no knowledge of. That is essentially an appeal to ignorance. You also provide a generalization as to why people may feel that the 90's is the better people by claiming that people remember things fondly. How do you know? They might just think that it was better. The only person and show that anyone on this board cares about is Bernstein. What does that state regarding level of interest and quality of the other shows?

You seem to acknowledge that B&B is the best post 2000 show in Chicago sports radio. If you think it is "tolerable at its best" then why are you even listening any more?

So basically everyone you loved in the 90s sports talk radio scene suddenly turned bad by 2000?

Do you not see where this is going?

Either they weren't that good, or things aren't as bad as you describe after 2000.

I see where you are trying to take it and I'm not playing that game. Have good day!

I don't really know how to read your reply but I did not critique the 90s Chicago sports radio scene. You are grasping at straws here.
