This is exactly what I am talking about. The discussion is if the show was ever good to great. Not what it is right now. Yet here we are, with you saying things like this.

I just have to accept it that you won't ever get the actual point.

It is my opinion, that there was a time when MJH was good to great, and a time when B&B was better than MJH and it was great. When you are responding please keep that in mind.

As it was my opinion that B&B was merely tolerable. Both are opinions but rather than just excepting it and keeping it moving there had to be a series of qualifiers. I noticed that B&B was considered good to great yet you haven't provided one reason why it was such. I simply accepted your opinion and moved on. You spend too much time trying to get people to defend positions yet you rarely attempt to defend any of yours. You also attempt to twist arguments to fit whatever narrative you have formed. It absolutely kills any attempt to have discussions.

Seriously, you misstated my posts in pretty much every post in this thread, so I'm just going to laugh at your complaint of me twisting arguments.

While I'm with LTG on all things Mac and North, I can and do recognize there was a stretch where B&B was good. Not my fav, but they did settle into a stretch where it was a good show. I'm not a Bernstein fan for a variety of reasons, but I give him credit...he still puts the work into the show.

Here's my problem with the current day Bernstein and the others and this is what I think is different from the earlier days....none of them seem to enjoy sports anymore. Early on, the guys would fire on the teams, but they showed a vested interest in the teams...that is CLEARLY missing. Bernstein may watch, but he'd rather be a SJW.

I still listen (on a limited basis) to B&B simply because there's no other option. I like sports....I have a long commute and it's how I like to unwind on my drive home. The formula for me is very simple...2 complimentary and respectfully different views discussing sports and having a few laughs. It's not there and hasn't been for a long time.

So basically everyone you loved in the 90s sports talk radio scene suddenly turned bad by 2000?

Do you not see where this is going?

Either they weren't that good, or things aren't as bad as you describe after 2000.

And you fail to see how this same logic can't be applied to B&B? In their case the two hosts have been "in place" for 17 years. The aforementioned pre 2000 shows were not. Sorry for misrepresenting your thoughts.

Also the two primary shows from the 90's were destroyed by 2000. I'm not really making this a pre/post debate you are. It's really coincidental that the two shows largely regarded as the best in the shows history were pre 2000.

The fact you are willing to dismiss an opinion while lacking working knowledge is truly impressive. It also is an appeal to ignorance.

My dislike predates the SJW stuff.
There were 3 main things (though not the only things) that began to turn me off.

1. Constant berating of callers. Even callers that made legitimate points were browbeaten by Bernstein. Callers that dared to differ from whatever Bernstein's narrative happened to be would undoubtedly feel his wrath. Didnt matter if their opinions were coherent or not.

2. Exploitation of callers under substance abuse or that had mental issues.

3. Cynicism regarding sports and the athletes that they covered. Openly bragging about there dislike of sports and the people that play it began to be for me a turnoff.

So what did Terry have surgery on that he needs 2 months off? He does radio, so unless he had throat surgery, there really is no good reason to be off this long.

I believe the commonly accepted theory is hip replacement.

If it was a major surgery, he's gotta be on painkillers for a long time, right?

I'm assuming it's a hip replacement.

So it's not only pain killers but he'll have a rehab schedule with a physical therapist after a couple of weeks. So 2 months makes sense. My Dad had his hip replaced and I think 2 months was about his time table for recovery.

Two months for hip replacement? I know several people who don't work form home - as Terry does - who made it back quicker. One of the guys at WFAN just had it - was back on the air after two weeks - broadcasting from home.

Why can't Terry? It has to be more than hip replacement - unless it is to give them audition time for Terry's replacement.

It's even beyond that. When bernstein gets really argumentative he will browbeat even the callers that are trying to agree with him.

He is clearly jaded and cynical with the role. It takes a very cynical mindset to tell people they are agreeing with you for the wrong reasons, but yes, he does it constantly.

Maybe it is his throat? A while back he went to the by crackys and other repetitive things to drops rather than live.

While I can't argue with 1 or 2. THIS is the biggest problem. They host a sports talk show on a sports talk station and don't even like sports.

I hate psychoanalysis, but listening to them after awhile made you wonder if they believed that doing sports was somehow beneath them. Especially in the case of Bernstein. I never got that feeling from Boers until he started partnering with Bernstein. I don't think they understood or cared that the "fanatics" that love sports are the primary reason that they are able to make a comfortable living.

I don't think Boers thinks that. I think he'd nod along at anything to collect his paycheck and avoid any discussion with Bernstein. Can't say that I blame him. Bernstein is insufferable.

That's likely the case and it's one of the reasons the show wasnt ever as good as HFC. Boers was McNeil's equal. It brought out the best in both of them. He would challenge Mac and vice versa. Mac was not as dominant as he was with Speigs or MJH. Conversely Boers wasn't as compliant as he has been with Bernstein.

I can remember how they used to be big on the whole "original thought" thing. Never would they nod in agreement to everything the Co host said.

Bernstein, Mike North, etc. are proof that the most consistent way to be noticed in media is to have strong opinions. It doesn't matter what the opinions are. In fact, they can be as ridiculous as a sports radio host thinking that sports are stupid, but as long as they are strong opinions, they will be noticed. Not saying that that's a revolutionary thought... people have been capitalizing on it since the advent of media... but it is certainly exemplified by the wine-loving, sports-hating, Duke-educated, evolved social justice warrior and ACL expert from Deerfield.
