Not sure what we learned about race from this case. Maybe it symbolized something greater. Was there a trend of black juries not convicting black defendants prior or before that? That would be an interesting study. There seems to be a lot of black people in prison though if this were the case.

O.J. seems more like a rich guy who was willing to use anything to stay out of jail. His well paid attorneys decided on race, and it paid off. Robert Durst's well paid attorneys used a different strategy.

Rodney King's arrest/beating and the subsequent acquittal of the LAPD officers involved in his beating simultaneously dwarfed and influenced OJ's trial.

Darden and Clark were over-matched. Any run of the mill competent prosecuting attorney from BFE would've scored a conviction vs OJ.

It influenced it but I wouldn't say it dwarfed the trial. The OJ thing was the main story in America for the better part of a year. Everybody was watching it every day. Everybody had an opinion on it and it highlighted a deep racial divide in the country that I don't think was as evident prior to this case in terms of how widespread these feeling were around the country.

Yeah, it was a year long CNN/CourtTV soap opera--similar to how a lot of people got hooked on watching cable news coverage of the first Gulf War. But I don't think anyone was gonna riot if the jury convicted OJ.

Yeah, probably not. Black Americans have good reason not to trust the authorities, but I think most black people knew he did it. They just didn't care. How many white guys killed black people without going to prison in this country?

this sounds like another Making A Murderer/Steven Avery seechooashun: everyone taking the slanted reality of a docudrama as actual historical fact.

You don't have to draw new conclusions about race for the entire thing to be connected to the societal issues of the day and place.

I remember being in a McDonald's when the verdict was announced and laughing with my dad at the reactions of the slightly mixed crowd. Most believed he did it, I had no doubt myself. But having just seen the Rodney King/Simi Valley fiasco, I must admit that even personally, it was a nice, if twisted FU from "us" to most of the people that had raped the community and fucked all the public supports/schools/safety nets for years. (And then became pious Reagan voters)

I don't think there was going to be much rioting/unrest if OJ had been convicted, no one in the community had really considered OJ relevant or even Black for years.

That's the funniest line in the O.J. mini-series. When Darden is barbecuing in his backyard and chiding his neighbor for rooting on O.J. during the Bronco chase, saying he was no Jim Brown and he's not even black and the guy turns to him and says, "He's being chased by the police. He's black now!"

Rodney King did very little wrong and certainly did not deserve what happened to him. The emotional feelings about that is understandable to all people.

The OJ trial was different because he was almost certainly a guilty man but the same types of support was given to him over the justice system. That showed a much larger sense of anger than the Rodney King verdict did.

My mom loved O.J. and she became obsessed with the whole thing. For a long time she insisted he was innocent, but eventually she knew that he so obviously did it. So then she just changed her stance to "I don't care about Ron and Nicole. I like O.J."
