Saddam controlled Iraq, and preferred secular efforts to "radical islamist terrorism" but he openly provided aid and assistance to "terror" groups causing trouble in Iran, Turkey, Palestine.

I think Donald was in the neighborhood of a good point--that taking out Saddam knocked the lid off the hornets' nest that is the various religious and tribal conflicts in Iraq that Saddam's mostly secular regime kept in check--often through absolutely brutal and horrific means.

Saddam's control of Iraq and his distaste for radical jihad nonsense is probably why Bush I/Baker/Colin Powell reined in Schwarzkopf/the US Army and told them not to take the battle into Iraq and take out Saddam back in '91. As Powell later told Dubya when Bush II was planning his ill-advised invasion of Iraq: "you break it, you own it" .

I'm confident that he wasn't making that point. MANY of people would agree that Saddam provided some stability in the world.
