If Independence Day 2 doesn't make a staggering amount of money opening weekend I'm prepared to declare an official end to the American Empire.

What would be better?

People criticizing the original give off the vibe they're trying too hard. Nothing to dislike about it.

Thank you.

Apocalypse movies are great, but they are not to be taken extremely seriously. I just like seeing the horror on the protagonist's face when he realizes there's a large shadow over Los Angeles, and it's not an eclipse.

I enjoy how the one liner about the world ending that always appears in these movies

Why do you think we'll get there and Washington DC and it won't be there?

first we have Brexit, now we have ID4 2 potentially bombing at the box office.

https://www.yahoo.com/movies/39-independence-day-2-39-underwhelms-with-41-6m-39-finding-1459164019138614.html

i saw it yesterday.

it is definitely an overstuffed mess, but there are some bright points in it and a few scenes that'll make you smile if you liked the original.

it'll also make you miss the original. for a derivative sci-fi yarn, ID4 was a lot of fun albeit predictable and cornball at times.

this time, there are too many characters and not many of them are all that interesting or likable.

also, the story itself gets so bogged down with laser blasts and big special effects, it distracts you from seeing how stupid these aliens are. starting with a promising premise of a gigantic mothership crashing down on earth and wrecking a good chunk of it, it starts to reveal itself as kind of dumb in that...why would these aliens who resemble an ant colony actually risk sending one of their queens down to a planet that they're just going to annihilate anyway?

but like the first one, we don't need the film to be smart; we just need it to be fun. for a good hour, it is pretty fun. but it weighs itself down too much and dances around too many things. if the first one resembles a tyson uppercut, this one is floyd mayweather.

i'd recommend it to those who enjoyed the first one enough that they have to see the story continue. but get ready to be a little 'underwhelmed' yourself, just like the box office was this weekend.

:D :D out of :D :D :D :D

Was going to see this over the weekend but decided against it due to the reviews (more accurately, the lack of reviews...apparently the studio didn't want advance word getting out that it was bad). I liked the first one and think I may reconsider based on your review that it's not totally without value.

it's probably not going to blow your mind or anything. but it is an entertaining enough cheeseball experience. and there is so much jammed into its 130 minute running time, you'll think you watched 2 or 3 movies.

It could be awful, and I'd still have to see it. The original is a classic. Plus WZ's reviews are always wrong. ;)

Holy shit that was bad. For the most part, the special effects were top notch, but the story and acting makes the original movie look like Citizen Kane. I can see why Will Smith passed on an easy payday. On the bright side, Maika Monroe was hot.

I forgot it had come out (WHOOPS), but I'll go see it this weekend. From what I've read this is the most blatant Made for China reboot ever.

Cheesy as hell and a GREAT flick.

Nerdy scientists back? Check.
Bill Pullman challenging an alien to a fist fight and then saving civilization after an inspiring speech? Check.
Jewish stereotypes? Check.
Saving the galaxy against astronomical odds? Check.
A ridiculous plot with so many holes you lose track? Check.

It was awesome. If Randy Quaid would have made a cameo, I'd have lost my shit.

This was exactly what I expected, and it was great.

Pretty much every movie I saw from last fall until X-Men Apocalypse had previews for this film. Then it came out & you didn't hear a word about it, barely an advertisement.

If the studio knew it was terrible, why did they spend 6 months forcing it down our throats, only to bail on it @ release?

Because it was great and didn't need advertising.

I believe Quaid being left out of the movie is what caused him to have sex on camera with his wife who was wearing a mask of the producer.

What a horrible piece of shit this was. It took just over two hours to watch but I fear it removed a decade of my life span.
